Engine choice for probable Jetta 3
Hi guys!
Quick question how easy is an 1.8 20vt engine transplant for a Jetta 3?
or would a Abf transplant be a easier route to take??
Regards
H.

Easier how?
Mounts will most probably be custom whichever engine you chose and management the same.
Easiest would have been vr6!

The vr would most probably be the most fun too. Especially if it is a 3.9!theunis.visser wrote:Easier how?

Re: Engine choice for probable Jetta 3
Well only doing planning for now, depending on what i may find either a carb or FI model,
just doing some homework as i dont want to regret buying something that wont be easy to modify,
& i am handicapped for now in terms of finance,so it would be a long term project-family car,
but to answer your question either 1.6 carb or 1.8 carb or FI on both versions or it might even have a 2e in already.
just want to have a good basis to start from & then buy motor, gearbox etc from there as time moves on.
But for now still looking for a decent Jetta 2 or 3

Re: Engine choice for probable Jetta 3
Sorry but both the ABF and 1.8t will actually take the same mounts so actually no custom building of mounts.
Both will bolt to the existing gearbox too. So in reality the MOST work will be a VR6 as you have to also swop out the gearbox, modify or get hydraulic clutch stuff to work. change the drive shafts, springs etc etc.
So Mk2, Mk3, Mk4 , 6N polo all basically had the same engine and gearbox subframe so ABF which was standard in overseas models and 1.8T which was in mk4 bolts straight in and onto the 020 gearbox found in most of them.

Panic is correct.
The cheapest variation to extract easy power in stock form will be the 1.8t 20v and not to mention turbo torque.

Ok. So if your buget allows this i would look for a decent, un molested vr6. This would give you a saught after car with nice power and all the bells and wistles from back in the day when cars were still cars, not computers on wheels.
The cli would also be a great choice in my book.
On the mod side of things.
If you do decide to go tubo on the sodimication i rate that the standard 1.6 or 1.8 gearbox and drive shafts and brakes and suspension and..... Would not last or keep up with the new found power.
Just my 2cents on the subject.
Remember that any modification costs alot, and by a lot i mean a s@#t load of, money, time and effort to get rite100%.

Thank you Panic,it is a relieve at least i know which direction to hunt now, tell me please the 1.8 20vt transplant to jetta 3: all factory mountings will fit & absorb the extra power?panic-mechanic wrote: ↑Thu Nov 08, 2018 9:32 am Sorry but both the ABF and 1.8t will actually take the same mounts so actually no custom building of mounts.

Re: Engine choice for probable Jetta 3
..very much agreed upon your comment, however an unmolested vr will probably be way over my budget currently& as mentioned this is gonna be a long term project, only choice would be either abf or 1.8 20vt for jetta 3 as it is much heavier than a jetta 2,but then on jetta 2 N/A power will be a nice alternative..choices,choices & money of coarseDub rox wrote: ↑Thu Nov 08, 2018 10:56 amBismarck wrote: ↑Wed Nov 07, 2018 9:06 pm Well only doing planning for now, depending on what i may find either a carb or FI model,

Re: Engine choice for probable Jetta 3
Are you going to buy a new engine, remanufactured or second hand?
If you going the second hand route from j@p tech or the likes remember that it is a second hand engine and you'll have to basically redo the whole thing to make sure it is relyable.
A few things to take into concideration are:
1 oil pump and pickup
2 water pump
3 turbo condition and seals
4 gaskets
5 service of whole motor, pluggs, bogies, filters etc.
Also stuf to take into concideration are the condition of the big ends and mains, alternator and starter. Plus the guys go at those engine harnesses with a grinder or hacksaw so i'd make sure all the connector plugs and sensors are in good nick.
Like i said, mods are not for the faint hearted and cost you a bucket load of. Not even mentioning brake setups and aftermarket ecu's and tuning.
REMEMBER a fast car is only as fast as it can stop!!

Re: Engine choice for probable Jetta 3
Jetta or Golf 3 20vconversion has been done plenty of times with success.
Keep in mind that the 3 chassis is much heavier than the 2.
The last revision's of the 1.8t 20v can easily see 160kw + 350nm+ ATF with minimal mods ,slap in a set of rods and you'll have a 300kw capable motor

think i am sold on that option, tell me about the fuel tank if i end up with a carb model in the meantime, does it need to be changed to FI fuel tank??ICE King wrote: ↑Thu Nov 08, 2018 12:47 pmJetta or Golf 3 20vconversion has been done plenty of times with success.

Yeah the 20v is also cheaper than a ABF , There's a bit of extra work when going 20v though , like boost pipes and intercooler.Bismarck wrote: ↑Thu Nov 08, 2018 1:01 pmthink i am sold on that option, tell me about the fuel tank if i end up with a carb model in the meantime, does it need to be changed to FI fuel tank??ICE King wrote: ↑Thu Nov 08, 2018 12:47 pmJetta or Golf 3 20vconversion has been done plenty of times with success.

Things like management and tuning would've applied to either motor
Best you get a FI tank, pump must be in tank to avoid Fuel starvation and will be more reliable long term.

Re: Engine choice for probable Jetta 3
Mk3 Jetta CLI (2 litre 8 valve motor) = 1112kg. I can confirm this as a friend used to have one and it was weighed at his works weighbridge and it had an almost full tank of fuel.
My Mk2 Jetta with a full tank of fuel, sound install, etc = 1080kg. (weighed on the same weighbridge).
So about 32kg difference, not that big of a difference as most people think.

That's hardly a difference than I thought, The 3 does look and feel more bulky having driven both.Jetta2 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 08, 2018 2:26 pm Mk3 Jetta CLI (2 litre 8 valve motor) = 1112kg. My opinion might be biased though , I love the Mk2 Jetta & Golf.

I had an A2 Jetta CLi and an A3 Jetta CLX, both had the 1800 engine - and the power delivery, performance and handling were worlds apart.Jetta2 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 08, 2018 2:26 pm Mk3 Jetta CLI (2 litre 8 valve motor) = 1112kg.
