RaceChip in 2017 Polo 1.2TSi 81kW - is it worth it?

Post by xorbot »

Hi everyone. I have the 81kW Highline and I'm considering installing a RaceChip, but I want to know if it will give me any noticeable gain in performance or if it's really just a gimmick. I'm thinking to get the one with the cellphone app control. Do any of you have experience with a RaceChip fitted to a Polo Mk5 (6C) 1.2TSi? And any opinions of the app? I like the idea of being able to change between a fuel efficient config and a more aggressive config on demand.

Any turbo car will benefit greatly from ecu tuning(plug n play or custom map), be prepared to void your warranty.

I thought the PnP units don't void the warranty. Is it detectable by the service center even if I take it out before giving the car in for a service?

It's easy to sell the dream that software is undetectable, until you are the unlucky one and the dealership denies your warranty claim. OEM diagnostics have improved drastically over the years, I won't risk loosing my new car warranty by installing any form of software. Unless of course, you can live with denied warranty claims. Old saying going, "pay to play". Most guys who mod on the forum understand the risks involved and generally modify cars that have proven to cope well with mods.

Then I'll rather not risk it. At least not while the warranty is still valid.

I see RaceChip does offer their own warranty as well, maybe research it abit more. https://racechip.co.za/quality_and_warranty_

Looks like they cover up to R50k damage to the engine from my quick glance.

Any software mod is detectable if the ECU's logs is read and you smart enough to know what to look for.

Makes sense. I'd then rather not take the risk on a new car. The warranty is worth a lot more than the aftermarket ECU.

Excellent video.

As you mentioned isn’t the onus is on the dealer to prove that a failed component was directly due to the modification.

Eg with tuning. The manufacture makes the same engine but tunes it for different cars. So that engine can tolerate higher outputs and the engine can cope. A lot of those chip manufacturers put limits to protect the engine after all.

Is there nothing in the CPA that protects the consumer in this regard.

Racechip meh.

They removed me from their FB page when i asked why are all their dyno graphs from overseas and do they even own a dyno.Their development happens in germany and that is why they post those results is what i was told. Also, they just have an office which doesn't have space for a dyno as all the R&D happens at HQ.

I don't know,sounds weird to me.

Sorry - WHAT?. You want to mod what the manufacturer supplies ie. basically break the terms of the warranty agreement and want the CPA to protect YOU?. I would rather ask if there is not something that protect the manufacturer from the USER / ABUSER in that case.

Well no... Go read the T's & C's of the warranty. Somewhere it will mention that no modifications are allowed. Logical/practical or not, thats the terms, You either adhere to them or risk your warranty.

That being said, Most manufacturers now days will only void the warranty on relatable items eg: if you do performance mods, it will void your engine and drivetrain warranty, But the will still cover the rest of the car. If you install coilovers they will void the suspension warranty, but the motor warranty will still be good.

Firstly, The majority of the motors that gets modded are already on the top end of that output range, eg 162kw Golf GTI vs 140kw Audi A3 2.0T, More common for the GTI's to get modded than the audi's

Secondly. Even though most engines are fundamentally the same, The higher output motors (in most cases) have additional mods like bigger turbos, cams, injectors etc to keep the mechanical tolerances where they need to be (eg: GTI vs R)

My advise is to stay clear of racechip, especially in a small motor

Had one fitted in my 1.4 TSI Highline (MK7). Yes there was a difference but blew the turbo (not saying it was due to racechip), lucky it was replaced under warranty.

On hard acceleration, car will go into limp mode, till I took it out.

If you still wanna install it you welcome to have mine for free and will also throw in their pedal booster as well.

Sold the car
