Golf 6 Gti P0172 Error

Post by K04 »

Hi Guys

I wonder if you can assist. A buddy of mine has a 2011 G6 GTi DSG. The engine light kept comming on intermittently. The car was stock at the time. When I scanned the car for codes, it brought up: P0172 - System too rich (Bank 1). The mech recommended that we replace the charcoal canister. We also did a complete service (oil, oil filter and plugs). The car seemed fine after this.

The car was then modded (DP, CAI, S/W). It was fine for a week, then the engine light came back with the same error. The car is terribly heavy on fuel (R1000 gives him 350kms- in town short distance driving) and recently has been hard starting on first start up. My buddy always found that his G6 was heavy on fuel from brand new, but he was told by VW that the consumption was normal.

I've checked online and there's a range of things that could be wrong :

16556/P0172 - System Too Rich, Bank 1
Possible Symptoms
Irregular behavior
Possible Causes
Fuel system
Excessive fuel pressure
Leaking or contaminated fuel injectors
Leaking fuel pressure regulator
Low fuel pressure or running out of fuel
Vapor recovery system
Air leaks after the MAF
Vacuum leaks
Improper seated engine oil dipstick
Stuck EGR valve
Oil overfill
Cam timing
Cylinder compression
Exhaust leaks before or near HO2Ss.

Has anyone had a similar issue and could possibly advise me where to start?

Thanks

Thanks for the feedback. We thought that initially, but the error was there before the software was loaded. Going to flash back to stock and try and troubleshoot from there.

Hey bud,

I would like to know if you managed to resolve this issue or not?

My brother has a 2012 mk6 gti with the same error code. It has been coming on and off for about 12 months and no one seems to know how to fix it. Even on the online overseas forums guys seem to struggle to resolve this specific issue.
On my brothers car its intermittent and comes on and off randomly. There are no visible effects but it surely cant be good in the long run.

Hi Guys.

Maybe this may help this thread.

In Nov 2011 my G6 Gti picked up a erratic idle. Car would idle up and down to 2000rpm.

Due to work commitments I eventually tackled the car just before xmas.

I cant remember the actual code but it was along the lines of leak in intake system.

We found no leaks. Changed the pcv which did not help.

Turned out to be the maf sensor. Might be worth checking. I used isopropyl alcohol to clean it and car was perfect. Cleared the fault and have not had that issue since
