Audi s3 8p intake camshaft replacement???

Post by Fahy_s3_8P »

Howsit gents,

I'm new to the forum  so please forgive me if this topic is overkill as I've tried to search the site but no luck.so here's my dilemma.

The first time I ever saw an s3 was back in 08,a black one boosted past me and fast forward to 2018 and I now own a black s3 8p.

I purchased the car in Nov 2017. The car had a full service history from audi till 136k km. I bought the car at 146k km and since I'm a little mechanically inclined I decided to do the service by myself :hurray: everything worked out great.

I had the cambelt service done by an audi "specialist" because there was no record of it having the cambelt done at audi. When the cambelt was opened up turns out it did have it's cambelt service done, just not at at audi dealership but for my own piece of mind,I did it again. I did the usual mods, downpipe, intake, coilovers and rim refurb. Just for precaution, I had a sump service done as well as a haldex service  so far so good.

I decided I'm at the point where I want to get my car tuned so I changed my cam follower ( bcoz I'm an overthinker) and I was just about to head over to the friendly tuner to get my car tuned :hurray: until I discovered a noise, so I understand that the 2.0 tfsi motor is noisy due to the injectors and Hpfp and Di and did not really bother about the sound until my inner gut told me to have it checked.

The car sounds normal noisy on start up and casual driving around but when I jump onto the highway and cruise at respectable speeds(or when the car gets hot enough) the engine just becomes rowdy. I've been hearing this noise on a few occasions so today I decided to head to my mechanic to let him have a listen.

Immediately he puts his head to listen around the cam chain area then dives his head into the valve cover, Looks at me , and then delivers the bad news......" your intake camshaft is stuffed" ....how is that possible? No loss of power, the noise isn't consistent besides,it's just a little ticking, at this point i silently start saying little prayers in my heart. He then whispers " could possibly be a rocker, I'll have to strip and assess". A little hopeful I become............

Now onto my question, based on the engine getting a little rowdy when its hot (ticking noise) could it be the camshaft? Has anyone ever experienced this type of stuff on the 2.0 tfsi? Is it normal and nothing to worry about? Or should I get it stripped ASAP? Any feedback and/or recommendations will be highly appreciated.

Sorry for the long post :bang:
Thanks all!

Yes possible and yes common and yes can be a lifter and yes you'll have to strip the cam retaining cover off to know.
