Howzit guys.

Long story short, my golf 7 1.4 tsi eats oil at about 1L to every 2000km.
Supper expensive to pull apart to fix if there is in fact an issue. So... I've been told by a few people to throw in 20W 50 shell oil and this should either slow the oil consumption or stop it all together. My cousin down in the cape runs 20W 50 in his race car with the same motor.

My point to this is, i see so many people just say put what VW says i should. My argument against that is the Golfs are made and tested in Germany and shipped to us. Germany and most of Europe gets snow, so minus temps. Logic tells me that, that is the reason for VW putting 5W 40 in the car.
We dont get such cold temps here, especially not in Durban where its always bladdy hot. So why do we require 5W when the oil wont ever be exposed to minus temps and will be thin enough to get around the engine on start up.

Should i try the HX7 10W 40 rather than the 20W 50?
Please dont tell me to put what VW says the car must use. VW also say the car shouldn't have as many issues as it does. Yet here we are.

I think there's a thread on the forum about oil consumption on Golf 7, its a known issue. Ive also seen post on hellopeter regarding the same issue from many vw golf 7 drivers, especially 1.4 tsi

To add Ive been driving a 1.4 highline since 2013, and only change oil upon service intervals (which is 15k), never had to refill or oil light coming on

Your highline makes more power if im not mistaken. I'm not to clued up but i would assume you would have different internals to accommodate for the increase in power. Which might be what has saved you. I've taken the car to so many people and the word "Soft" has been used every time to describe the TSI motors

What is the theory around using a thicker oil to slow down oil consumption?

Please don't crucify for saying something incorrectly. I dont know much and basically just piece together things as i learn. Kind of why I'm here asking for advice.

So from what I've been told, basically thicker oil wont slip past the rings as much as thinner oil. My thinking in putting a thinker oil in the car is to test how many Km i get before i need to put more. If i can go 10 000km and its only eaten half. I see that as a huge success compared to the 2000km i currently get. If i can only go 4000km with ticker oil, then id guess there is a bigger issue.

This is all to avoid booking the car in. I've been told by a few mechanics that thicker oil wont be an issue for the motor.
What do people here think ?

This is exactly why I am asking as I am not an oil expert at all but enjoy learning.

Wouldnt deviating from a manufacture spec, affect the running of the car than that being a solution

They are protecting themselves from warranty claims for excessive oil cons. Covering their arses, that's all.
