2.0 TSI Timing Chain-Tensioner Failure

Post by VLVN »

My timing chain failed 5 days before it was due to go to mechanic for replacement :bang:
I thought I was being way too premature with replacing the timing chain because my car only has 98000km's on the clock.
I was hoping that their would not have been engine damage since it failed on cold start. I had my car towed to Ryan from RPM and they stripped the engine...turns out I was not so lucky :(
I'm waiting on a quote from RPM at the moment, but I started this topic so that I can share specifics surrounding the timing chain-tensioner assembly. Will keep you posted about the developments :)

Newsflash: This is (South)Africa. our vehicle manufacturers wipe their arses off on more serious issues.

If enough people get on board, it can happen here too. Easy to ignore 1 customer, not so much when it's 100 with lawyers.

I'm going to give the car model a guess, 2010 - 2012 Mk6 GTI or Scirocco?

I had my timing chain/tensioner fail on my 2.0 TFSI TT the day after it came back from its 105k service at Audi Rivonia and R26k later it's back on the road.

Luckily there wasn't any damage to the engine but I'm not totally happy since I asked them to take a look at the timing belt/chain as it had started to get intermittently noisy at idle. My advice is to take it in as soon as you notice any slightly odd rattling sounds.

Sorry Bro!
It takes many bolts to assemble a car, but only one nut to scatter it all over the road.

This appears to be an ongoing problem. My Audi Allroad A4 with 94 000 k (2013 model) has now had a engine failure due to this engine fault (timing chain stretch due to faulty tensioner on chain). Always serviced at Audi and car is like new barring needing a new engine revamp! Battle about to start, with Audi any advice?

Fix it and move on. They not going to take responsibility for it. Maybe at best try have them cover a certain % of the cost

Be prepared. When mine failed on 120k a few months back total cost came 32K of which i had to cover out of my own pocket.

So Audi SA will take no responsibility for the timing chain, despite Audi USA offering $6500 or extended warranty to those effected (2 liter TFI EA 888 engine) in the USA. The fault identified there is the timing chain tensioner being faulty which causes total destruction without warning lights (my car misfired at low speed for 1 morning on my way to Audi). This is also a serviced part in the USA but apparently not here so my advise is to have any Audi or VW with this engine checked out. The damage is now at R47k, awaiting for feedback on whether any assistance can be given by the Audi agent. Audi SA put nothing in writing in response to your letters (they phoned to tell me the road conditions are different in SA as to elsewhere in the world, how that effects a timing chain tensioner, I have no idea) and even suggested the agent would financially assist but it appears did not talk to the agent about this. GRRRRR Have no problem with Audi Waterfront and their approach thus far.
