South african mk5 differences between years

Post by theunis.visser »

Hi.

I am I'm the market for a used Gilf gti mk5 but am getting confused with what i see.

For instance a used car dealer here in Ctn has a 2007 with xenon headlights and a 2008 without? Most other specs is the same??
Am I missing something?

Does anyone have a breakdown of what was standard in what years?

From what I understand there were warranty recalls on the Fsi engines. Would one be able to have the warranty data pulled from Volkswagen via the vin to see what was done? If it wasn't done, would vw honour a recall repair on a 2007/8 vehicle??

I appreciate your feedback.

Xenon headlights were always an optional extra.

From 08 head units were mp3, I think.

Can't think of any other differences.

Thanks for the reply.

What would be a good price for a 07 with xenons? Around 190k on the clock.

Normally the overall condition is a good indicator. Also test drive from cold and check, test aircon they seem to fail (across all models), DSG check for box oil services every 60k km's

Thanks Howie-wp.

Dsg scares me as far as failures and repair costs go. Manual is the only option for me.

A manual is not cheap either to maintain. Iirc a clutch kit is around R15k, before Labour.

And we have seen the thrust bearing on the engine fail on a manual. Bearing then fell into the oil pump. Bye bye motor.

Generally things like xenons and sunroof were optional extras.

Best is to go by condition of car rather than mileage but if possible something with full dealer history. My personal preference would a manual but if you go with DSG the I would suggest a nice long test drive in rush hour traffic so you can put the DSG to the test. You will quickly no if the box is iffy after sitting in heave traffic for a while.

They have their usual common issues like coilpacks, PCV and cam follower etc. Have started seeing more serious issues with them as they get older which perhaps Panic or someone can comment on.
