9n3 Gti Control arm rubbing on subframe

Post by James Christians_Nam »

Hi guys,

I recently overhauled my suspension and installed new shocks, control arms, control arm bushes (Went for polys), ball joints and stabilizer links. Immediately when I got the car back there was a knocking or scraping like noise when I would go over humps/ pot holes and when I would turn on incline and so on. After some investigation I noticed scratch marks on the sub frame and on the LCA close to are where the front bush is on the LCA. I figured it was the poly bushes because they were much more firm the stock bushes. I removed them and put in stock ones, no change. I have some Cupra bushes in now. They are much firmer than the polys I had in but still no change.

The last thing I can think of is that I somehow have faulty control arms. Because the previous control arms never did this.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

i did notice the oem lca sits very close to the sub frame towards the front...maybe the lcas you fitted are slightly bigger at that section...and with movement and flex from bushes they touch...

Yes on uneven roads one can hear it... The oem bush was horrible with the new control arms. Because the can flex so much. I think ill have to get a hold of another control arm and have a look. Its driving me crazy man.

You sure it's the correct Control arm you bought? Or perhaps just a bad quality pirate part?

The old ones were fine other than some play in the wheel coming from the front control arm bush. Now the front bush on the control arm isn't available by itself here in Nam. I was forced to buy new ones just to get the front bush. Once I had them fitted the noise came (As mention before). I would have been better off buying a set of poly bushes that has the front and rear bush from SA or so but I was impatient. I'm on a tight budget now. My wife and I welcomed our son in Jan. I would like a bigger car but no ones wants to buy this one because of that noise... Its really of putting.

I visited a machining shop during lunch... They can help with shaving of a few mm of where the contact area is. Only issue is they can give me a price yet. Ill need to remove one control arm and bring it to them to see.
