MK6 EVAP system issues

Post by Belix »

Hi folks
have an intermittent issue with the catalytic converter warning light (yes, it IS called that, according to the manual)
If I clear the error, and check later it shows the issue as intermittent. But sometimes is triggers the MIL light for a day or two. It comes on for a day once or twice a month, usually for the day. Having the light on does not seem to hamper anything, but is irritating.

VCDS Scan gives:
1 Fault Found:
001089 - EVAP Emission Control Sys
P0441 - 000 - Incorrect Flow - MIL ON
Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 11100000
Fault Priority: 0
Fault Frequency: 10
Reset counter: 255
Mileage: 92096 km
Time Indication: 0
Date: 2017.12.05
Time: 06:46:38
Rosstech says
Possible Causes

Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Regulator Valve (N80) faulty/jammed
Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Solenoid Valve (N115) faulty/jammed
Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Sealing faulty
Pipes between Tank Breathing and Throttle Body leaky/blocked

Possible Solutions
  • Check Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Regulator Valve (N80)
  • Perform Output Test
Check Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Solenoid Valve (N115)
    Check Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister
  • Perform Basic Setting
Check Pipes between Tank Breathing and Throttle Body
Morne suggested changing the fuel filter which seemed to help for about a month, then the light was back on.
I'm not too clear on what to look for when you "perform basic settings" part in VCDS that ross-tech suggests. I recall having done the N80 test before, but now VCDS seems to not allow "selective output tests" as the option is greyed out - but anyway some forums have said the test for the N80 valve does not run long enough to identify it sticking anyway, but worth a try.

Thanks, good to know you could get rid of it.
Geez, R1600 for a charcoal canister from VW? What is their mark up on parts, 150%???

Edit: Correction, they sent the wrong quote, pipe and canister - R2321.04

Hey Gents.

I just bought a MK6 GTI DSG just have my car now for about 2 weeks. That Fault in exhaust system warning light came on yesterday and hasn't gone away. Car is idling not so smooth...and feels like performance has decreased a little. Took it to a mate of mine and EVAP error came up.

Is this serious? Should I be worried as im doing a long distant trip tomorrow.

Is this a quick fix and cheap?

Ok looks like mine has gone away...Gents at SRspeedworx said could be that is blocked up or clogged up. So I ran my car to the point of the reserve tank empty, filled it up and all was good.
SRspeedworx are busy with my car and checking what and sorting out my fuel consumption. The car is damn heavy on fuel.

I finally solved it.

The interwebz claim anything from the N80 valve, to a gas cap that needs to be replaced to blocked lines.

I kicked my charcoal canister into touch and replaced it with a Mk1 fuel filter.

This can easily be checked by removing the canister and removing the plastic solid line and taking the rubber line staright to the connection next to the fuel line.

Thanks L.C. Certainly a cheaper way than buying valve and canister one at a time to see what works...

Guys, I have the exact same issue. Where can I get more detail on how to do this ? Do I just ask for a normal mk1 fuel filter ?
Any errors if the car doesn't detect the charcoal canister anymore ?
Any help will be appreciated, I am a mechanical noob.

Just get the carb Mk1 fuel filter....

On how to do it, just remove the hard plastic line from the fire wall to the canister (it unclips) and then cut the existing rubber line to you desired length. I'll take a pic of mine for you to see.

Good day gentlemen...

I seems to be having same issue on 2010 MK6 GTI with error "P0441/001089 - EVAP Emission Control Sys: Incorrect Flow".

Car was just recently serviced and N80 was checked, there was no problem with it. Cleared fault a few times and then it comes back every time.

If possible can someone post picture of the mk1 filter replacement?
My assumption would be that direction of flow is towards the tank away from the n80 vavle?

Sold the car before taking a pic sorry. But like I mentioned it is pretty simple.... just remove the canister and close the line with the fuel filter.

Don't think the direction makes a difference, it should be only vapour going through. If there is liquid fuel, you're probably overfilling, and that's likely what killed the charcoal filter in the first place.

found this also ..
This guy deleted the canister using 2 mini K&N filters, no problems for the last 6k miles and of course no CEL.

Re: MK6 EVAP system issues

Would think it would then always show an error - I thought the system checked there was always pressure in the system, and if there is a drop, it knows there is a leak and triggers the light. I would have thought doing what LC said would be the best way to kill the error, unless it relates to the valve...

I also thought it worked with pressure but the Charcoal canister has a breather pipe on the bottom when I was checking.. check on the side of the image below..

From the diagrams I've seen, the pipe sticking out is from the vent valve - and that seems to be the part that fails the most often. Some systems have a solenoid instead of a valve.

From the two filter mod above, I can only think that the system compares the pressure at the fuel tank - which is now atmospheric pressure if vented with the filter - and the pressure at the purge valve - now also at atmospheric - and if they are the same, no light is triggered.
