PROBLEM WITH TURBO 2.0T BWA

Guys,

I did the downpipe on Saturday on my A3 2.0T at Patrix Service Center.
I was told that there is play on the turbo shaft and oil is leaking past it into the exhaust.
I now have excessive oil smoke.
Would I need to replace the turbo or is there any other way of fixing the problem.
I called Mr Turbo and they only supply a balance turbo core for R3000
Turbo Exchange wants R10687 for a brand new turbo.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

Sorry for jacking the thread.

Panic seeing as the Gent mentioned that there is play on his turbo, is there any measurements or upgrades one can do to lengthen the lifespan and increase the longevity of the turbos internals?

No.
Use good oil, don't drive like an ass, let it cool down before shutdown.
Those are about all the things you can do.

Spoke to Fastec who advised that the manifold will probably be cracked due to the mileage which is common on these cars.
Decided to just bite the bullet and get the new one which comes with the new manifold which Morne will fit

Why not just get a K04?

You can get a k04 in reasonably good condition for R6500. Dv relocation is about R2000 and then you'd just need an intake and change your tune to stage 3.

ohhh yeah, tfsi would also need injectors. Same downpipe would work, cooler isn't really needed.

Just replace like for like in that application. Stupid to spend a ton on upgrades on a car that is not used in that way and add risk to something thatnshould be a simple turbo swop.

Ok an update on the situation, the new turbo was installed on 27/07/2018. Morne informed me that a lot of oil fell into the exhaust system and there will still be smoke, I need to drive for about 500km or so to clear out the oil.
My concern now is that I have done around 800km and the smoke hasn't cleared.

The smoke is only visible on take off after idling, nothing in gear.

Morne said he will check it up when he has a gap, but for now I am worried that the car may have another problem causing the smoke.

Note that the excessive smoke only started after I installed the DP on 19/01/2018.

Any ideas?

Smoke is always there, more so when you floor it.....

Any ideas, could it be a problem with the head, or oil rings ?

oh, and the mileage is 169000km, well maintained prior to me taking ownership.

It could be either pistons, broken ring landing or the head yes.
Remove spark plugs and see if they are maybe all wet or one worse then the rest.
Do a compression test.

Thanks. The surprising thing is that I had no smoke on Saturday for the entire day. In the evening, I had a few spirited drives, then on Sunday morning the smoke is back....

Note it is not excessive, just a puff.,,

Thanks, after sorting out the DV last Wednesday, Morne said that the smoke doesn't seem normal, but to give it another 400km and then he needs to assess.
I must say, the smoking has decreased quite a bit from when I first replaced the turbo.

Like if i now am standstill and rev it slightly, I don't see the smoke rising, yet before if I had to do the same, the smoke would come to the front depending on the wind direction and is very noticeable through the passenger side mirror...
