Hi guys, I'm Tas

I have a Golf 1.4 tsi 2009 Trendline :bang: . When I bought it a year ago, the cam belt was replaced. 2 weeks ago the car just wouldn't start after parked for a full day, had to get it transported home and the mechanic that came out to do diagnostics said it's the timing belt/chain and that valves were now bent and it's gonna cost a pretty penny to fix. I don't know about these things so please help me.
1. There was no indication/warning that the belt was going
2. Does the diagnostic pick this up?
3. Where do I start as I don't have faith in the mechanics and I don't have the cash to send it to VW.
4. How do I know when reliable parts are being fitted?

Well diagnostics will show that the bottome end is turning and the cam not. Also it will generally speaking go together with a lot of noise if it failed.
Cam chain almost never breaks but a tensioner can fail and lodge into the chain and make it skip teeth.
What area or where are you based maybe one can recommend a known reliable mechanic for you.
