Re: Oil usage
Hello and welcome.
Can't answer your question - maybe try posting in the technical sections instead. However, I hope you get sorted soon as those Jetta's are awesome cars. Very light on fuel with plenty of power to keep you interested.
Good luck.

Re: Oil usage
Thank you for the responses. i will post it on the technical section.
Four days after i got the vehicle the oil light went on there was very little oil in. i then added three pints of oil and took back to the dealer who topped it up. a week later i saw it has dropped about 5cm from the full line of the dip stick. is that normal or not?

Re: Oil usage
A test was done by VW and they say it is normal useage for this car to use so much with 1000km it is like 0.079g of oil. Their words is that it is within the permissible tolerance. I would like to know if this is normal?

Re: Oil usage
If I understand you correctly, it went from the oil being full to being below the minimum, based on the 5cm drop on the dipstick? That doesn't sound like 0.079g of oil, at all.Juls wrote:A test was done by VW and they say it is normal useage for this car to use so much with 1000km it is like 0.079g of oil. Re: Oil usage
When you wipe away the **** and technical jargon, what VW are saying is that the acceptable oil consumption on their engines is actually around 80grams of oil per 1000kms.Juls wrote:A test was done by VW and they say it is normal useage for this car to use so much with 1000km it is like 0.079g of oil. Next thing to remember is that you have to measure the oil correctly in order to determine if the engine has an oil consumption problem.
For example, if you check the car before you leave home and then stop for petrol and check it again, it will be short oil. This is because all the oil has been circulated up into the engine and is no longer in the sump.
Overfilling a modern engine will cause it to "breathe" oil which can damage the catalytic converter.
Correct oil checking procedure is always like this:
1. Level surface
2. First thing in the morning before you even turn on the key. If that's not possible then after the car has been stationary for about 4 hours.
3. Preferably cold engine. Oil and engine parts expand and contract when warm.
4. Check twice.

Re: Oil usage
0.079g is only 79mg (milligram), which is about 2 drops.
Presumably Juls meant 0.079kg, which is 79g. This is about 100ml, or 0.1l. That really still isn't much. It comes to 1l per 10.000km or 1.5l per 15.000km. I actually thought that acceptable usage was about 10 times that (1l per 1000km). At least it used to be, up to the 1990s.
Juls, in your earlier post, do you really mean 5cm, or rather 5mm?

Re: Oil usage
I worked for BMW back in '99 and their oil usage was also 1l/1000km.VAG Fan wrote:0.079g is only 79mg (milligram), which is about 2 drops.

Later Motorplan would accept a claim if an engine was proven to be smoking after following a certain diagnostic procedure.
