To cone or not to cone ??

Post by AirborneZA »

Ola

I got bored over the weekend and fitted a CRP cone filter similar to the pic. At first it was mounted with a 90 degree silicone pipe and aluminium angled pipe (63mm) but I would get this strange hesitation/missing in the 3000 - 4000 rpm range, before and after that it pulls smooth. I then removed the piping as I suspect the silicone fitting as the culprit. I now have the cone connected strait to the MAF housing and it pulls great but at about 5000 rpm it makes this really loud whistling sound that goes away at about 6000rpm .... is this normal or should I just chuck it all out and go back to the stock airbox ??

Put back the stock airbox with a good quality filter (try goldwagon for a Hengst filter)

That's the sound of a turbo getting all the air , The 90 degree messes with the MAF reading hence the hesitation. Think about , with the 90 degree there will be more air flowing on the one side of the MAF.

Choice is yours whether to go back to stock or not ,
I usually put my stock air box back when taking the long road that has the expected gravel roads and dust etc.....but otherwise love the noises

imo, if you want to a different sounding car or just need a change, maybe do the exhaust first... it's a mod that actually gives back...

What's bad is that people don't do cone filter upgrades the "right way"

The filtration, its a maf killer, in some cases decreases power.

In my opinion, the only pros are they sound cool and come in different sizes.

The correct way is to firstly purchase a cone filter that's the right size for your car, not one that has a bigger diameter than the cars rim. Then secondly you can either buy a cold air intake system off the Internet or ultimately design your own which is usually beat as only you will know what design will work best for your engine bay. Essentially you want to design a intake system that either directs or redirects cold air from the front to your cone filter and at the same time block off hot excess air from the physical engine. Once you've completed that setup and you are satisfied with the way it operates, you will need to update your vehicles software to accompany the difference in the intake air your vehicle will receive now with a different intake setup. Basically redo air a fuel ratio. Main issue here is no one does the second and third part at all. You can Google ideas by using the words "cone filter heat plate" this should provide you with ample images that can direct you into a design for your cars engine bay.

I thought that stuff went without saying,

with regards to redoing the airfuel ratio. i ddnt think that would be required, as the ratio should be the same whether there is more air or less air. but with colder air i can understand why the ratio will go off.

thanks for the explination.

Like they say, small things make a huge difference in the end. It's about ensuring your car runs as efficient as possible while you enjoy it.
