Rattling noise from the engine bay
Howzt guys
I have a 2013 polo 6r gti that makes a rattling noise during cold start( on incline or decline) or if it has been parked for more than 3 days. So i took it to vw thinking its "the timing chain tension issue" .. to my surprise VW said its a turbo so i tried to get the mechanic to explain exactly whats wrong with the turbo and he said its a "wastegate". Now id like to know symptoms of a bad Wastgate.

Re: Rattling noise from the engine bay
On my Golf, the waste gate came loose, there is a threaded rod with a nut on it that when tightened, compresses a spring that holds the wastegate shut against an opening in the exhaust side of the turbo, when it is loose it rattles,
I only heard it rattling when the car was idling, when I rev it and then just before the revs could come down to idle you will hear that sound.
my tuner instantly told me its the wastgate when he heard it.

Re: Rattling noise from the engine bay
My work vivo had a rattling noise, turned out to be the chain as the tensioner was on its last lapse.
You could hear the rattle sound at ever gear change whilst the rev dropped when you pressed the clutch to change gear.....even more so at higher rpm

if they say its the wastegate its worth checking, kingozzi wrote:But mine rattles only on cold start.. was it an easy fix?
it was easy enough for me, but I enjoy getting under my car,
just go under the car and see if its loose, remove the heat shield around the drive shaft for access, you will probably battle to get to the nut to tighten it, but you will easily be able to feel if it is loose,
I watched a few videos of YouTube to see how to adjust a wastegate and then did it myself,
or you can pay someone to do it,

Re: Rattling noise from the engine bay
Highly unlikely for a wastegate to only rattle on a cold start. It should rattle all the time as turbowheelchair said.
Since u mentioned "been parked for 3 days", seems as its some sort of lubrication issue.
Not sure of the 6r gti, but if its chain driven then u might want to get a second opinion.
U could also add an oil additive to give extra protection on cold starts.

When a car tailgates me, i slow down - then floor it and give them a cloud of diesel smoke to choke on

Re: Rattling noise from the engine bay
Hi I have a 2013 polo gti and everytime on a cold start I hear this rattling sound, bt when I drive it goes away. I once had this pblm b4 and VW said it was the time chain and that was fixed, so what might b the case now since the sound is back?
