Audi A4 2.0T Engine Failure

Post by spiaro »

My mother’s car developed an engine problem. The Audi dealership have quoted over R80k to replace the piston and con rods. The dealer contacted Audi South Africa who have said they won’t assist.

The car is a 2012 Audi A4 2.0T SE with only 39,600 km on the clock. The car has been fully serviced and the motor plan finished in May.

I have searched the forum and seen some issues with oil leaks with these engines, but I cannot find any similar issues.

Does anyone know if this is a common problem with these engines? Could it be caused by the oil leak issue?

It seems to me that such a catastrophic engine failure on an engine with such low mileage, would be a manufacturing fault and therefore would be something a responsible manufacturer would take of … but as it is out of the maintenance plan it seems that the Audi will not assist.

Any advice or information would be appreciated.

A simple oil leak wouldn't cause an engine failure unless the motor ran dry due to the leak not being attended to and the oil pump did not pick up oil. Have you diagnosed the problem with the engine? I'm almost certain these motors have oil level sensors that will warn u when the oil level is low

Timing chain tensioner failure. Well documented failure on the TSI motors. Did the car suddenly fail to start one day with no prior warning?

they have two common issues and it is chain tensioner failure or broken ring landings on the piston.
If Audi is not going to assist then don't pay them R80k to do it. You have options from independant shops. State your location then one can give you some references

Thanks for feedback.

It seems they do not know what the actual problem is. The compression on one cylinder is 2.4. I do not know much about cars, so I am not sure what it can be.

The dealership want R12k to strip the engine and investigate. Audi SA have said they may assist once they know what the problem is ... a bit of chicken and egg!

Panic, I may PM you for info once we know what the problem is for some advice.

Low compression is simply one of two things.
Broken rings/piston or leaking valve/valves. or a seriously blown head gasket but then there will be overheating and pressure in the cooling system.
At those low km it is most likely piston related.
R12k to strip is ridiculous. I have heard that so many times in the last week alone that it ain't funny.
So the problem is that if you give the go ahead for that you are committed to go with them doing the repair either way otherwise it is money thrown away and they will work that into the final price if they continue with the repair apparently.
So unless you are absolutely sure they will help when it is stripped it is a very hard decision. They kind of lock you into going there with the carrot of they might help. That is really a decision only you can make. If they strip and then not come to the party with the repair cost it leaves you on the hook for R80k.

i stand to be corrected but even if they help fix it i dont think they put in the new revision tensioner, so it can happen again..
