2006 A3 Sportsback 2.0T DSG fuel consumption

Post by YUBEN »

Guys, I recently purchased an A3 Sportsback 2.0T DSG for my wife. Fantastic car, even has Audi Navigation Plus.

The thing that concerns me is the fuel economy. I currently drive an N54 E92 335i auto yet at the moment this 4 pot Audi is the same if not heavier than my 335i.

Surely something is wrong there?

My wife is getting used to the Audi and I can assure you that no spirited driving is taking place, just heavy traffic .

The OBC shows that average consumption is 14L/100km.

I filled R400 and could only manage 205km before the light came on to refuel. Definitely heavier than my 335i.

The car has the Audi performance upgrade, and is rated at 170kw. Could this upgrade be causing such high consumption?

Will a decat and downpipe improve the current situation?

Or should I get rid of this Audi upgrade and go for a software flash like FR&R etc?

Thanks Guys.

These motors are not light to begin with. And heavy traffic is no help for consumption either.

Take a bit of a trip with the audi to see if it settles a bit. Could be driving style as well. Doesn't mean if you don't drive spiritedly it will be light on juice.

Take the car on a long trip without traffic and drive at 120km/h for about an hour. See what the consumption is like then...i think its likely due to the stop go traffic your wife is driving in...

I drove from DBN to JHB and averaged 10.0L/100km.

Not sure if perhaps the OBC is reading erratically?

Cos from cold start it fluctuates quite a bit.

And before anyone thinks that I should know this , I'm comparing to my 335i on the same route which is constantly lighter than the Audi.

That consumption is definitly seems on the high side. My S3 DSG averaged around 8.5l from jhb to Durban.
Traffic will bump up the consumption but it shouldnt be that high.
Rather get the car checked out before software. Also a clutch calibration wouldnt hurt. What is your location so we can reccomend someone?

I have a Jetta 2.0T DSG, driving 80 I have seen 6.5l/100km average over 70 kms or so, driving 120ish I see about 8/100, in traffic I see 13/100 easily depending on how slowly it's moving.

It is heavy though, I average around 10.5l/100km around town in my MkVII R, not a great comparison as it is a more modern engine but considering the power it has.

Thanks Guys. So we established that the consumption is on the heavier side. Comparing weights I noticed that my A3 is 102kg heavier than the GTI 5 which will make a difference.

The other thing I noticed is that sometimes the DSG box doesn't upshift as fast as on other occasions. So I'm not sure if the box needs to be re-calibrated as previously mentioned.

Another thing I want know from other DSG drivers is if your car rolls slightly back on an incline when you leave the brake.

Get it on a diagnostic. see if there are any errors and that in reading blocks the engine temp seems reasonable and that the lambda sensor and airflow meter is reading right.
