Exhuast leak ok Golf 7 Gti

Post by ooh_pee_see »

Hi Guys.

Need some advise if possible.

I got a downpipe fitted to my Mk7 gti. After the installation i started to notice the exhaust fumes smell inside the cabin. The car is stock and the smell was so bad that it actually made me feel sick.

Took the car in and they reseated the downpipe and added some silicone at the joint between downpipe and stock back half and said there should be no leaks and off i went.

2km later the smell was back and still strong as ever. I then connected the Torque pro app and checked that the O2 sensors where in error state and after a few resets and some hot and cold starts everything tests fine.

Now the smell is not as strong as before but it is still present. Went to another exhaust shop this morning (due to public holiday) and they checked and told me I have a leak at the connector in the middle. They proceeded to remove clamp, silicone and reseat. Started the car and said there is no leak now and i left.

However the smell is still coming through and it was too late for me to go back.

Anyone has experienced this or has any tips or services to fix this for me?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

it just sounds badly built. silicone on exhaust joints almost never last. You are sure it is not firegum.
But either way it just sounds like they built it badly.

silicone sealer on exhaust joints does not work. I am always amazed when I see it from exhaust shops. Specially if i was in an effort to fix an imperfect joint.

I have to agree with Panic.
Sounds like your DP was badly build and installed.

where are you located and who did the terrible job?

The DP flange probably warped while it was being welded and now it's permanently leaking in the bay where the fumes can make their way into the cabin. DP would need to be removed and machined flat if that's the case.

I cant point any fingers. I did buy it second hand.

Will take it in to get machined and if the problem still persists then its back to stock for me and that can go in the bin.

Yeah fumes seem to be coming in through the passenger side cabin mainly.

Take it back to whoever fitted the thing and tell them to do a proper job. Simple. If they can't refit OEM unit, as that does not leak. :hurray:
