PCV blank causing clouds of smoke

Post by Legion739 »

I've had a PCV blank on my car for ages, no issues

Then did a K04 conversion and I noticed that if I stand on a up hill my car starts smoking white smoke like crazy, as in clouds.
It will sometimes also randomly start smoking like crazy in traffic.

I put my stock PCV back on, and had zero smoke, drove around like that for weeks not a drop of smoke.

Yesterday I put the PCV blank back on to test it, car ran fine but smoked, then this morning when I started my car (It was 5deg outside) It would start and then idle for about 5sec and die.

Put stock PCV back on and the problem disappeared.

I'm not going to put the PCV blank back on my car as it just seems to cause shlt, but I want to get to the bottom of why the PCV blank causes smoke, something must be wrong or blocked and I want to figure out what so I can fix it.

PS. I have a BWA motor (Mk5 GTI motor)

This is the best pic I have at the moment, I can take better pics later if required. (This setup worked for months without issue)
This exact PCV blank was on a friends S3 for at least a year, without any issues

A few guys have been complaining about the same issue with non OEM PCV solutions (block offs and catch cans)... so I’m in 2 minds as I need to replace mine...

I've also seen on some forums people experience the same issues, but removing the Blank off feels to my like treating a symptom and not the cause of the problem.

My 2 cents is that the blank off forces all the fumes through the rear PCV and into your turbo hot side ...hence the smoke
Try the re-route to the catch can solution else just stick to the OEM PCV

White smoke can also indicate a leaking brake master cylinder, I know that it seems you may have your solution, but check to eliminate it as a cause to your problem.

I have had Pcv block offs on a couple of vehicles and none of them smoked with the block offs. My ED35 has been running one for over 10000km and no smoke(touch wood). I might look into a catch can later on. The charcoal canister needs to be moved then :bang: .

If to much fumes causing the smoke then you will have sump compression causing the smoke and a lot of oil will accumulating in the boostpipes.
Do a check when you have the pcv blank off installed remove the pipe that clip on it from the bottom end and rev the motor and see if some fumes comes out the blank off and unclipped pipe from the botton.
Healthy motor is not suppose to have a lot of sump compression.

I think my OEM PCV is farked, and Blank is causing smoke.

When I pull out my dipstick with OEM PCV it sucks in air through there and dies.
Will swop it out and see what's up

Good Morning I seem to be having the same issue but Mine is on a 1.8T S3 BAM engine, i have fitted a catch can and installed a blanking plate and everything was running fine for a year or so, but now when standing on an uphill or sometimes in traffic it smokes white smoke it looks like its vaping...
wondering if it has anything to do with the catch can or something of the sorts
I noticed that if I stand on a up hill my car starts smoking white smoke like crazy, as in clouds.
It will sometimes also randomly start smoking like crazy in traffic.

any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
