Golf 7 GTI Vibration - Problem fixed

Post by ruler_70 »

Hey guys,

So last night i took the car out on the highway for the first time.

I noticed a slight intermittent vibration that only happens in 6th gear when the car is under load, ie. when at around 120km/h and accelerating on an uphill.
It doesn't happen every time, but sometimes a slight vibration can be felt when doing this. (the RPM at this point is around 2200-2300rpm.)

What i want to know is if this is normal due to the gear ratio's on the GTI, could the vibration be caused because i should be in a lower gear, or is this something else?

Thanks in advance.

Yeah that kind of RPM and trying to pull under full load is not healthy and could cause a vibration. 4 Cyl motors don't like that kind of thing much.

So i took the car out on the highway again and realized it wasn't gear related afterall.

There is a vibration coming up through the seats, so much so that the passenger seat shakes visibly.

From the googling i've done, it seems like it could be unbalanced rear wheels.

Gee ok that is not really a minor vibration or slight vibration as you were saying in the first post.

Yeah, definitely not engine related. I've also got a slight vibration at that speed and it only started since I rotated tires. Not going to spend R6k on 2 tires to fix it though. (tires are balanced and aligned)

Yeah from all the googling I've done, it seems tyre related.

It seems that almost every GTI and R has this at some point.

Mine fitted with same rubber and I am 90% sure its the tire. I just have too much tread left to take-off and throw away. Car is chowing rubber pretty quick so will just ride it out.

Just giving a bit of feedback on this issue, as the problem has been solved :hurray:

So I took the car back the very next day, car was sent to a tyre shop (I took the car to the tyre shop myself) for balancing, as we suspected that this was the problem.

When the tyres were placed in the machine for balancing, they were all balanced correctly, however immediately you could see that the tyres were out of round (flat spotted).

The tyre shop notified the dealership and within an hour they called me to let me know that they had ordered new wheels for my car.

The wheels arrived and were fitted this morning and I am very glad to report that the problem is fixed and all vibrations are gone :hurray: :driving:

Epic after sales service from the dealership as well :hurray:

I kid you not, it doesn't even feel like the same car!

You'll love how smooth it is once you have the new tyres on!

GOLF 7.5 GTi has it bad...

I went through these motions as well. My car is brand new and has been doing this since I got it. I fought with the dealership about this and they have eventually replaced the tyres 4 months in.

I can ttell you how many times the wheels have been balanced, alignment checked rims and tyres checked for out of round and nothing.

This did not resolve the problem on my car. Its still shaking the seats.

Very sorry to hear that you're experiencing this problem.

I should mention that the dealership did not just replace my tyres, they gave me brand new rims and tyres and the problem was gone immediately.

Around 3 months ago I upgraded to the Golf 7.5 GTI and it is as smooth as silk, so it should definitely not be doing this.

Maybe try and see if you can get new rims from the dealership as well.

I'm currently experiencing the same sort of vibration. I have Pirelli P1s on. Can't wait till the tread is low and I can finally change these crappy tyres!

Thanks but it's definitely not the rims either. I took it to a rim repairs company who checked it for me with Lazer equipment. Both the rims and the new tyres checks out 100%

They're also flabbergasted. I made an appointment with vw tomorrow and th GM has a few plausible ideas. Disks, shocks, CV joints coil Springs. So let's weet of that bears any fruit. Will post the saga as it goes for anyone else who is batting with a nasty vibration.
