Raw fuel smell - Mk6GTi - Help needed

Post by PSI'D_OFF »

Hi Guys,

Over the past few days, I have noticed a strong odor of Raw fuel. More so noticeable when the ignition is turned on (Car not started) while parked in the garage at home.
Took the car to my Mac and he checked the following, Fearing a leak somewhere in the car.
1. Scanned the car with VAGCOM - no errors.
- Car drives normal. No missfires or hesistation. No major noticeable difference in fuel consumption.
2. Checked the Lambda sensors - fine.
3. Washed the intake filter and cleaned the MAF sensor.
4. Fuel filter was replaced 5000km ago at 80000 service. No signs of cracks or leaks.
5. Checked all fuel lines in the engine bay and underneath the car. No signs of leaks.
6. Check the entire undercarriage
7. Checked the seal for the in tank fuel pump under the back seat - no issues.
8. Fuel filler cap is tight and secure.

The odor is localized under the car as no fumes are present in the engine bay or inside the car. So that rules out the Charcoal canister, Injectors and seals and Intake manifold.

Any help or advice is appreciated.

Does odor vary depending on tank fuel level? When switching on, I take it the fuel pump primes, so maybe that is the reason for it being more noticible when ignition on.....

Goggle reveals somewhat common issue.....

Hi Howie,

Thanks for the response and the referral links. I saw those threads and and tried some of those and no luck yet.
It happens all the time irrespective of fuel level as well.

I suspect its the injectors but no errors are coming up in the scans and the car is not misfiring at all even at WOT.
Has anyone had injector issues without misfire codes being thrown?
No fume from the engine bay or inside the cabin. It comes from underneath the car. Put the car on a lift and checked everything, removed the splash covers etc....no signs of leaks anywhere....
Gonna leave the car at the mac on Friday again and take it from there.

Check the fuel lines leading into the engine bay - blue/black iirc
Check also the pipe thats coming off the HPFP
Check the pipe going to and from the fuel filter under the vehicle as well.

Quick Update,

Spend a few hours under the car and checked every Fuel Line, Bolt etc. and nothing.
Wiped all the lines clean and even idled the car while it was on the ramp.....and still nothing.
Decided to inspect the exhaust again. The car has an aftermarket Turboback Stainless steel system with 3 silencers.
Upon close inspection, we found a small crack on the first silencer just after the downpipe. The crack is on the flat side at the back if you looking at the exhaust from the rear of the car. Weirdly enough, the exhaust sounds exactly the same......
I will take it to the exhaust shop on Saturday and see if the box can be repaired or replaced.

I am praying that this is the culprit. Fingers crossed.

Update,

Had the crack on the silencer repaired. No difference. I am am at a loss now.
I have been advised to have the injectors tested. Anyone know of a reputable place to get this done?
Thanks,
