Polo GTI 9n3 Gearbox swap? video added pg2
Hi guys,
What other gearboxes readily available is swapable with the 02R 5 speed Polo Gti gearbox?
Ive always had a slight whine when coasting or when accelerating in 1st and 2nd gear.
Recently ive noticed that when accelerating in 1st or 2nd the whine became louder and more metalic and the whine also follows the revs becoming higer pitched as the revs climb.
When this started, it would come and go and would either be the normal whine or the ginding type whine.
When accelerating normal the whine is sounds normal but as soon as i accelerate hard the whine tone changes to a bit of a grinding noise (Not grinding like missing a gear)
Now it seems like its happening all the time when i accelerate hard. I also get a soft humming noise like a wheel bearing at around 2000 to 3000 rpm and this started with the gearbox issue but this doesnt happen all the time
I have changed gearbox oil from liqui molly to OEM Vw oil thinking that this was the issue but its still doing it.
So yeah either looking for a cheaper option of swapping the gearbox with another model that is straight fit, either rebuild it or try finding another PGTi gearbox.
Im also not sure if this could be Diff related? Since doing the gearbox oil change i dont get gears grinding when changing to 2nd too quick.
Any help or suggestions.

Common issue, mine does the same in first as well as coasting in neutral.
Just repair the same box?

Re: Polo GTI 9n3 Gearbox swap?
Its not really affecting anything, im just worried that something is busy breaking.
Ive read up about the input and output bearings that start moving causing the shaft to move and then gears to touch other gears and this is causing this noise. but not 100% sure if this is the same, i know nothing about gearboxes.
I also dont want to change bearings on it and then i still have the same issue.

mmmmm,RPGTI wrote:Mine also whines in 1st its normal for that box even the guys in the UK and Aus say the same thing.
So just to get it right,
The whine you guys have is like a normal gearbox whine when driving a nissan 1400 but has a bit of a grinding/sandy type noise. its not a crisp souding whine, its hard to explain.
Ill try find a video or take a video.
but if you guys have the exact same whine then atleast my worries are less.

It does mean that something is on it's way out... contemplating just buying a new box. I've heard so many stories about gearboxes never being the same after they're repaired

Re: Polo GTI 9n3 Gearbox swap?
Doubt they will just replace it if its still working. Will probably just send it in for repairs.
It will have to break completely for them to pay you 13K to replace. but thats a topic for another day.
People are saying its the Main bearing and some say its the dual flywheel...

Re: Polo GTI 9n3 Gearbox swap?
Had the exact same issue with my gearbox. 1st and 2nd gears were whining. I had the box repaired and my mech replaced the 1st and 2nd gear bearings. Issue sorted now and he did show me the worn out gear bearings.
Let me know if you need the details for my mech.

Another note : While the gearbox is out, check your clutch. I replaced the dual mass flywheel clutch with a VR6/ABF single mass flywheel clutch setup.

Re: Polo GTI 9n3 Gearbox swap?
Isn't 1st and 2nd an issue in these boxes? Or was that just the syncro between the two gears?

Re: Polo GTI 9n3 Gearbox swap?
I know the second gear syncro was an issue. When i bought my polo, the dealer had the 2nd gear and synchro replaced on my gearbox as it was grinding badly.Neuk wrote:Isn't 1st and 2nd an issue in these boxes? Or was that just the syncro between the two gears?
Now i dont get grinding, just the whine.

Re: Polo GTI 9n3 Gearbox swap?
The whining sound is related to the 1st and 2nd gear bearings. The syncro issue was related to the grinding effect/noise when changing from 1st to 2nd gear.Neuk wrote:Isn't 1st and 2nd an issue in these boxes? Or was that just the syncro between the two gears?

then it would be cheaper to get a second hand box.
Can get a Ibitha Cupra 5 speed that just needs the gearbox mounting welded on again for R3k

Ill need to take the car to a geabox specialist so that they can drive and tell me what it could be.
Or take the car to Morne at VW and see what he thinks it is and take it from there.

VW dealer price will be 18k to do bearing and hub. Mig had his done in 2013. Try Rex Diff and Gearbox in Boksburg. Heard they are pretty good.
