Golf 5 GTI issues. Please Help

Post by 4 100KS GP »

Hi guys , I need some assistance. Car in question Golf 5 GTI ( Mods: Revo stage 2,ITG Intake,DP and forge DV. Last week my car went into what I believe is a soft limp, happened while on an incline at wot around 4500rpm , felt like a miss and then the car felt as if it had no Turbo. Had the car scanned and logged (thanks to Shygolf for his time and patience) no errors but we noticed the following:

1.Timing pull on all cylinders from about 2000rpm ( between -8 and -11 degrees). From what I've read this is bad.
2.Fuel pressure drop from around 3000rpm to 4600rpm (requested pressure 110bar my pressure drops to 70bar). The pressure then increases back to 110 bar after 4600rpm.We checked the rear pump and this seems fine. Front pump seems to be the offending part here but not 100% sure.
3.Around 2700 rpm the wastegate starts to open, from comparing previous logs this does not seem to be normal.

Not sure where to start trouble shooting and hoping you guys can point me in the right direction. I have the logs but cannot post them up for some reason.

Any help will be highly appreciated. The above mentioned issues are really making me worried

Thanks

+1 ^ worn follower and or hpfp cam lobe or plunger worn (buy new pump or upgrade to Autotech). No low fuel pressure dtc's?

Also a bust coilpack <- wont always throw an error.

Worn follower with prolonged use makes this happen.

Thanks for the replies guys

@ solo - Setting B7 T3 F9. Cam follower has been checked normal wear and is replaced every 7000km, no scoring visible on the cam lobe.

@ Dale - Inspected the pump plunger all looks fine, never had a follower that failed. No errors regarding fuel pressure. Could coil packs on their way out cause timing pull ?

When I had SW (APR) on my car got similar symptoms while on holiday.

I was in Durban when it happen and Sameer from Experience Performance helped on a Sunday "Rave".

Car was fine on driving but on the Dyno started jerking. We changed Coils and ran test on Dyno again, no problem...Fitted old Coils and drove back to Jozi next day.

When I returned to Jozi I send car to VW and changed Coils to new. (Problem was solved!)
Also removed SW, car running on Stock file with HARDWARE upgrades (DP, Intake etc.)

Advise would be to check Coils .
I also had a cracked HPFP Sensor,..EASY Fix

Thanks, I managed to get another fuel pump to try and see if that solves the fuel pressure issue. Going to replace the fuel filter as well and get some R8 coils.

Will update with results after this weekend.

Ok cool will replace the follower, awaiting R8 coils should have them by next week. Plugs seem fine but i have another set so will try them out. Inspected the sensor no cracks. Chatting to a buddy and he says that coils should throw an error if they were cooked , would bad coils pull timing ?

Thanks for the assistance guys really appreciate it

If your fuel pressure is dropping that much and you're seeing that much timing pull it must relate to your lpfp or hpfp. There are other things not relating to your fuel pump that you can check like Maf, Map, Iat sensor on your intake manifold also inspect your intake manifold for leaks/cracks, throttle body, cam positioning sensor. What fuel are you using? If any of those sensors were faulty they would log an error, a faulty coil would misfire on a specific cylinder also logging a fault and the car would idle badly or make a tazer like sound on acceleration... your issue seems like a fuel pump related issue!

Lpfp is within spec, I suspect it's the hpfp. Fuel BP95 , when we scanned the car for errors nothing came up that's why I'm stunned at this issue. I will inspect the intake for crack etc, replacing the fuel pump today.

Thanks for the help once again.

it could be the internal seal on the hpfp thats shot and its losing pressure - but in that case it usually drops down and does not recover pressure

Hi guys

Okay a small update, I replaced the fuel pump and follower and the issue is still present need to log it again though but it the car still goes into limp mode under wot in high gear from 3000rpm and after a few km's of cruising its back to normal. Checked the intake for cracks and cannot find anything. What I did notice is that in all gears when driving the car hard from take off there is a “whistle “ from the intake around the same rpm where I'm having the issue. If I can recall this sound was never present previously. Could this possibly be a sign of a boost leak? and would a leak cause a drop in the fuel pressure ?

Thanks

have you logged the boost pressure to check actual vs requested
and when you say your LPFP is within spec- what values are you seeing? It should not go below 4bar

Re: Golf 5 GTI issues. Please Help

Post by Solo786 »

from 4000 rpm the WG is closing to make boost.

If you check the car for boost leaks and you find none then its likely that your K03 is cracked in the exhaust housing and around the WG door and isnt making boost as it should.

It could just be the ecu pulling back the fuel pressure as a safeguard, as from you've mentioned thus far it doesnt seem like anything is a miss on the fuel side.. to be sure pull a log of the lambda values when you get a chance.
