Well, been running almost 2 years with this setup and no issue. And if you look at how that revised tensioner work then you can see what it does when oil level/pressure is low.
Also knowing I was going to keep the car, I took the plunge and did the replacement.

You will be fine with the revised tensioner, it fixes the flaw on the first one that causes it to fail and the chain to skip teeth.
The 2011+ cars have the revised tensioner. That revised tensioner is specifically designed not to fail like the original one.

You can have the tensioner changed, the part is R1200+- for the revised tensioner. There are special tools required though such as the one to hold the crankshaft.

It is a case of wear on the original tensioner, it is not random lucky packet style.

Same as the cam follower issue on the 5. It is caused by wear, eventually when it wears out completely you break stuff.

If you are really worried spend a couple thousand and replace it with the revised tensioner regardless of model year.

According to the part numbers on the top, the revised one would be the one on the left, no?

So according to the above if the motor was built( not car sold) in roughly 2012, they have the tensioners revised so no need to stress

Very possible yes.
But I have the "suspect" 09 model, just thought I would try to reduce the risk of failure.

My motor was built in August 2012 (final spec, last batch D chassis numbers), and sold to me late 2012 with chassis number showing MY2013 on VW's system so hoping I am safe cause if my car doesn't have the revised parts, none has from the factory then.
