To be honest, I think the 12k was including the lunch money for the office for the rest of the month too. I know they were trying to rip me since some guys in the States could actually pull off this job themselves in their own garages. But, since this is a delicate job requiring know-how and special tools, I'll only let VW attempt it. Still, R12k to try and fix VW's mistake out of my own pocket is laughable.

Reason number 232514 to switch my VAG brand to Audi and stay away from VW.

Similar amount to what VW were going to quote to fix my Polo TDi back in the day. A certain legend was able to perform the same task, albeit with a reconditioned head, for 1/6 of the price VW quoted. The problem with this GTi issue, as NeoSA pointed out, is the need (recommendation) for specialised tools to carry out the repair/replacement work...

That's why I'm waiting for Belix to say what Morne quoted him. If it's a reasonable amount, it's basically THE most important "preventative" task to do on your G6 GTi.

I'm waiting on your feedback dude. Spoke to someone at VW today and it can get expensive if you have to replace the chain as well. But in the end it's the tensioner that fails, not the chain.

That makes me nervous.

Well, the VW dealer I spoke with (not that I'd do this with them) said that it's about R6k to replace the tensioner. However, if the chain is deemed to be worn as well, then they'll have to replace that too which is another R6k. But he was just shooting from the hip.

Whenever VW takes time to get back to you, it means it's going to be expensive. If that's the case, I'm selling this car before the maintenance plan runs out. I'm not prepared to spend R12k just to safeguard myself against a VW design flaw. Stuff that. They can take their car. I'll move to Audi then.

+10000, the guy is basically VW South Africa's best asset if you ask me. I'd rather get information from him about what this would cost before I listen to someone else.

What's on the cards, Dean?

Got back from the UK yesterday and took my car out for a burn this arvie. After a week of trains and taxis, I feel so blessed to be able to thrash my car up and down the M4 with no traffic around. Charlie feels much fresher with the new head; kind of like what he would feel like after a de-carbon, I suspect. Loved every minute of driving this car.

Pending the quote Belix should get from Morne, next year might be an expensive year for my car. I need a set of new tyres (R15,000...eina), Carbon Cleaning (~R5000) and replacing the tensioner with the revised number. That's close to R30,000 in maintenance related items alone.

It was a sale in a rush. The buyer wanted my car for ages.
Just so happened he asked for it when I was in two minds.
I haven't decided yet, using this time to find the drive to sort my mk1 to what it should be
But the MK7 R or a M235i are my options if I decide or an SUV LOL

Nice options. The Mk7 R is getting a lot of good reviews for its driving characteristics and fun factor. I'm also harbouring thoughts of a SUV... I really like the current Touareg.

Yoh. No brainer for me. M235 > Golf R any day of the week. I would feel a lot better about myself paying >R500,000 for a car if it's a BMW rather than a Golf. But that's my personal opinion. There's a whole tread on here about this very discussion lol

four doors says Golf R. You take a baby chair with baby in and out a two door often enough and you won't go there...BMW taking there sweet time about a 4 door 2 series. Yes 1 series, but butt ugly...
