You'd think so but then they added cars like the 4 series GT etc that mess everything up.
Maybe I'm waiting for a 2 series GT...

Yeah, I'd rather spend my 500k on a 4 door car with similar performance to the M235i... It's a bit of a dinky car and I cannot justify a 2 door when I'm planning on increasing the family. Perhaps a 4 door E90 M3, but then fuel consumption would be better on the Mk7 R and performance would be pretty similar up to legal speeds.

Anyway, hijack off. Fuel consumption on the new head seems a little high, but then I've been giving it a bit of stick once the oil temps are right, so that's understandable. I only managed an 8.7l/100km to work today. I reckon with normal driving all the way, I can get that down into the 6's. It's difficult not to drive spiritedly though, as the car is feeling really, really good.

Morne came back with R8,782.47 but he mentioned the chain so not sure if that would be replaced too. Car only has 47000km so would not expect the chain need to be replaced. Prefer them to leave it anyway! Also not sure whether that is Ex or Incl VAT. Car goes in next week Monday so will report back next week...

Please tell Morne to take notes during the install and save the quote - he'll be doing it on my car next year :)

No lucky got a lift home. Styling it in a i10 today!!

Car is with Morne. Will report tomorrow or wednesday. I asked about the chains and he said it was a good idea to change them at the same time, even with my low milage. I said he should do what he feels needs to be done.
Wondering if brakes will be done this service...nearly 50Kkm on original pads now, can't complain about that!

Got it done, will work out cost as it was mixed with some other items, but under R10K as that was the total bill.

i got a question for the guys that have replaced the chain tensioner etc.

does this guarantee a sure fix?

if not you still have a 12 month guarantee on the work done

the work done affects the engine

so if something goes wrong and motor gets stuffed and you car is out of warranty but work is still under warantee

would vw do a complete engine fix and everything?

Wish there was something like a "sure fix" from VW. It's a revised part, which supposedly means that they've re-engineered it to resolve the failure points of the previous revision. Considering the well known TB on this issue, I don't think it would be difficult to "win" a full engine replacement on the 12 month warranty should the tensioner fail and bork the engine.

Having said the above, I'd not be asking the internet to console me with this information. Get in touch with VW and request an official response.

That's why I'm doing this work next year when I still have a year's worth of maintenance plan left. If it does fail within 12 months of having it changed, I have the 12 month work guarantee AND my maintenance plan to cover it. That way I don't give VW a lot of wiggle room if something goes wrong.

@Belix - So was that less than R10,000 including a new chain as well? That's pretty awesome. That engine should be sorted for the next 150,000km.

If I sum it all up, hopefully correctly, it was R6,554.49 incl chain ex vat (but excluding items items that were replaced/changed with the service, like oil etc). About half the amount was labour charge

Hi guys!

I've got a 2011 golf 6 gti with a FSH. Warranty expired a yr ago. Last month I tried starting my car to no avail. Sent the car in to the dealership(Alpine vw). They said that my timing chain jumped and bent the valves. They say that it is not a factory fault. Quote is R49000.

I'm currently in discussion with VWSA requesting goodwill, which was initially declined by the dealership. I haven't been given any figures thus far, but it's becoming more apparent that there will be some assistance.

I would like to know if anyone else has had this experience and if so, did they manage to get vw to fit 100% of the bill?

Just now spoke to my brother-in-law who is a mechanic at Audi.
He doesn't know of any such problems on the Audi engines.
WTF! Isn't VW and Audi the same thing??

It's a known issue, but if out of warranty then you'll have to pay yourself. Best is to take the car to someone else to fix.

Ouch that is rough.

Reading all this, so it is better to rather change the timing chain tensioner and have peace of mind before it fails.

I would consider the tensioner a preventative maintenance item if I were to buy a EA888 2.0tsi, rather spend the 5K odd and replace then sit with a 60K bill.

Out of interest sake, his aftermarket warranty is covering 40K of the bill
