1.8t 20v Twin charged build

Post by Stompie »

So the other week i sat and thought about how awesome a twin turbo setup like the new polo gti would be on my engine. I have never heard its been done or seen it until today my dream became true and o my left nut this is awesome!!

here are pictures and specs of the build i found and must say the workmanship is just  and the welding is epic.

AZG Block, @ 83mm bore
AZG crank
Manley rods
Mahle Powerpack pistons
Billet mains (have 'em, why not)
ARP bolts top and bottom
AEB head
Revolver cams
Cat gold springs
FX400
02M quattro (awd swap..... eventually. Next summer maybe?)
LS2 truck coils
Uni830 until I can get a custom tune
Siemens 830cc injectors w/ Bosch 2000s as a backup
044 in a surge tank w/ stock intank lift pump
Cxracing front mount and meth injection

I think that's about it.

Boost will be provided by an HY35 56/56/9 and Eaton M62. Goals are 450-500whp with no traction, ever, anywhere. Why? Because a bt1.8t, out of boost is dog and sometimes, just sometimes, I don't want to have to get on it to go up a hill or pass someone on the highway and the TT tranny I have has really tall gears. Also, its a cool factor of 10,000.

twin charged - but I see a problem - whats he going to run the turbo boost on(0.3-0.5max) cause from the look of it the SC will be constant boosting through rev range and with the added boost coming form the turbo.... it will compound up top - things can get pretty nasty up top unless he is running very very low compression but even so would love to know how he gets the boost right - in most of these dual setups that Ive seen they normally use the weaker charger to drive the higher and try stay away from compounded boost.... will be interesting

lol it has never stopped...

This is the older 1.8t 20v engine like my polo but from the older Jetta 1.8t. what this guy is doing is he has changed the turbo and built a custom intake mani with a supercharger connected to it and so forth. looking at making 500whp.

I know i said twin turbo but i just made a mistake, i meant twin charged as mentioned that its the same type setup as the new polo gti, turbo and supercharger. the one thing that makes this setup tricky is, this engine wasnt designed for this so the supercharger does not have a clutch that disengages at higher or low rpm. so that makes this a bit tricky as the turbo and supercharger will run together.

I personally would like to see a TWIN TURBO setup on a 1.8t 20v engine done but doubt that will ever happen.

That clutch system is not engine specific, the polos have it connected to the waterpump or something like that

He could just walk into a Merc dealer and buy a R170 or W202 clutch....wire it up to a boost switch and solenoid.

Although it is nice I would assume picking the right turbo will yield that kind of power without the lag. Or maybe like you said originally  maybe 2
turbo's could work as apposed to turbo + supercharger like this guy. One smaller turbo for low down and one slightly larger for mid to high I know space it pretty tight and 2 downpipes,manifolds,turbo's,TIP's,DV's,n75/mbc will be a mission to fit in that space on a polo but the mk4 golfs have more space then us or maybe twin scroll turbo manifold technology like BMW?
