Golf 4 gti advise

Post by flash23 »

so im considering getting a golf 4 GTi

currently have a golf 3 GTi and the digifant system seems to be very heavy on fuel.its also an aging car so im looking at replacing this in the next year or so

for now im just looking for something that will be comfortable as a daily driver and will be fun on the freeway( not into robot to robot kinda stuff). also want to go the turbo route so its easier(actually should say simpler) to satisfy future power cravings

ive heard how good the 1.8t's are at handling power and are mostly reliable and i think this is a big part of why i want go the G4 Gti route.due to the high rate that Polo's get stolen im not keen on one of those but another 1.8t that is attractive is the 8L a3's.

what should i be looking out for with these models? are maintenance costs high?

i am not looking for a fast car and i know how heavy these cars are, my main points is fuel economy/comfort/entry level turbo thrills

any advise would be highly welcomed

oh and in terms of budget im looking at between 50k to 80k

G4 and audi very lovely cars those 20v motors are strong...i always tell myself that the maintanance costs of the future depend on how well the car was maintained in the passed before u bought it... but just think about the ....

Would love to get one of those but they are so scarce and when they do come up for sale they are on the pricey side lol

Friend bought a Audi S4 there. I believe a lot of the cars are people that are tired of fixing their cars and just sells it to them.
But he picked up a bargain knowing the faults.

I personally would take a G5 over a G4. But there was a clean one for sale on FB recently.

Nothing wrong with that. And webuycars make it pretty obvious in their adverts (and their name) that they actively cater for this market. It just means that the buyer should not be naive.

Correct, we checked the car over. Found the issue. Decided the price for the car justifies the problems and made the purchase. Problems fixed and happy miles ahead.

MK4's are great cars. I miss those Recaro seats the most and they are reasonable to maintain. Thumbs up

So a friend of mine told me about a guy selling an 8l a3 1.8t and thought what the hell let me have a look, it's a pre face-lift model, has plenty of small scratches and 1 dent on rear quarter panel, interior is good, could use a clean but it's good condition. The only thing that's putting me off it is its at 370k and the current owner only knows the service history of the last 50k although he has had the turbo serviced 3 months ago. Also the Abs light came on and didn't go off which I'm sure it should, no check engine light atleast

Car sounds good though, no smoke no leaks and just front disc's to be done

The guys wants 45k is this too much?

Negotiate for 40k & use the 5k to do the complete cambelt service. Just last week the 8l S3 snapped the cambelt & owner lost apetite since. Play safe

That was the plan but the mileage scares me a bit, I was planning on doing complete cam belt and changing water pump when I get it

300+k is scary and I don't know how much of the suspension is original of that

Get the Facelift Version.
Look for a AUM motor with Drive by Wire.
Will be much easier when you planning on doing some small mods and software.
I sold mines last year for 48k with mileage at 190 000 and full spec with sun roof and leather, 76mm DP & Exhaust, CPI Stage 2, Coilies, etc.
Resale is bad on these cars so you can get a good deal if you look had enough.
Make sure maintenance was done properly and ask if sensors like MAF, O2, coilpacks were replaced.
