IS IT WORTH GETTING A Volkswagen Golf VI 2.0 TSI GTI WITH 220000KM

Post by ijohn »

Hey im new to this forum and I'm no car bof but I'm wanting to purchase my first 'proper' car an have decided to go with VW more specifically a GTI model. Im currently looking at a 2nd hand Golf 6 GTI TSI with 220000KM on the clock. Im wondering if it would be worth investing in this vehicle. Would I need to do a full service of some sorts?
I have posted a direct link to the online ad.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Not getting the link but don't think the mileage by itself would be much help in indicating the condition of the car. IT could be 220,000km of sedate highway driving. If the car is properly maintained and items fixed as they fail, the mileage should not be an issue.
I'd have a look at something along the lines of a Dekra technical inspection if you want to good a good idea of the mechanical condition of the car.

Don't take it personal, but I assume you looking at a GTI with high mileage as it is what fits into your budget?

Take it from me. I bought my Cupra, when I was still doing articles and thought I can "afford" the monthly payments and insurance, but forgot that it was still a performance car that would require maintenance, and things like brakes, tyres and normal services were more expensive than what it would have been on a "non-performance" model.

So if you can afford it if it needs a clutch or a mechatronics unit or a Cam Tensioner with an average cost of R15-25k one shot, then go for it.

The car might have been properly looked after and not need any big ticket maintenance items and only need normal service items, but it can also become a money pit real fast.

Don't try and buy a Merc on a Polo budget is something i've learnt the hard way, with the credit card debt that came with it.

Simple answer is no, stay away from it.

My golf is around that mileage and I have looked after it but it has costed me a lot of money once it went past 170k km. The only reason i have it is emotional attachment - it's maintenance is higher than what I spend on the A8 for incidentals.

They are great cars but require maintenance especially so the more mileage it gets.
The Chain tensioner issues will mean you need to perhaps do preventative maintenance - budget 10K
The Coil packs don't last forever - budget a few grand
The waterpump leaks - budgets a few grand
The radiator has a tendancy to leak - budge a few grand
If you really unlucky you will have high oil consumption issues - if really bad you looking at a engine rebuild - second bond money

I loved my MK6 GTI but it was the most unreliable car I owned by a country mile

I sold mine on 156000km. At that point it was using oil between every second tank. I had spent about R10k on maintenance in the last month including replacing the water pump. I loved the car but it is expensive to maintain and run.

If you can really afford potential expensive surprises then go ahead. Otherwise avoid.

Probably post 130 000km. Tyres and brakes which are normal. Battery. Pcv valve. Oil level sensor.

After the pcv valve and oil sensor it was still drinking oil.

What concerned me was that the turbo rattle had returned even though I had installed the turbo clip some time ago.

I second that. - tensioner, oil leaks, starting issues and mine only had 105000km. Guess it was just a lemon

Water leaks, water leaks, broken pistons. That is the most stuff we see in those engines.

I genuinely would not buy a G6 with mileage north of 130k, it is likely to end up being costly. If I sell my car today for 20k, it will still be at a loss.

I'm only on 106,000km
then again...Sounds like one with 220,000km would have had all the issues addressed at least once already...

@Ijohn
Browse the forum as there is detailed posts about issues with those cars and it sounds like you will be buying yourself a money pit.
What is your budget and are you looking at a performance car?

A 6 GTI is still a fantastic car, just get one with decent mileage. North of 200k that is hilux territory.

I would get the Edition 35 over a normal G6 GTI as well to be honest

My father has owned one from new, now at 280k km's with very poor maintenance. Only now is the original turbo starting to smoke and that's about it. He does not drive slow either

Won't that have all the potential issues of the mk5 gti motor?
