Intercooler to MK1 caddy

Post by Zoltan2222 »

Hi

Which intercooler should I get to fit nicely infront of my radiator in a caddy mk1.
I have fitted the golf gti radiator (850 or something mm) allready.

You should fit the radiator and measure the size and space available and work from there.

I can suggest this, but it might not fit well or as good as you would like it to fit, example>>
You will need to get one that will fit in between radiator and grille, 50mm or 63mm core. You can squeeze a 76mm core in, but then there is no space between radiator and intercooler.

Length wise, you will need one that is the same length as that radiator either with straight outlets for the 90 degree bend silicone hoses or have aluminum bends welded to intercooler. Some guys run full height same as radiator and some lower height ones, all a matter of preference and space availability.

Dual headlights must go in most instances as the intercooler and or its piping catches on the spotlights.

There is an intercooler off a iveco turbo daily that fits perfectly on a mk1 but for the life of me I can't rembwr the specific model.

@panic, I think this is the one you refer to from the Iveco Daily 89 - 92 models

Pipe centres are 821mm with 50mm inlet and 60mm outlet.
OP is using the longer mk2 radiator and need to double check his radiator dimensions.

I have used a 600*300 *76 cooler, removed 3 rows from the top so the bonnet catch closes properly.

Sorry, its the IC from a ford focus, did not get to play last night but the IC pipes will fit part my rad and it seems thin enough to fit between rad and grill and also its low enough.
What impact does an intercooler have on a turbo, will a too big intercooler cause concerns?
For is it as simple as bigger is better when it comes to an IC?

No there is no advantage to going simply huge for no reason. If you are running a stock turbo on that engine you don't need a HUGE intercooler. It's a little bit of trial and error too and you have to be able to measure or look at temps.
