Mk2 2.0 16v golf GTi vs Jetta Cli

Post by dshunmugam »

Hi Guys

I have not posted on this forum before mostly because I have not had much value to add. I have though been inspired to start my own dream project.
With limited funds, I have managed to buy a shell of a mk2 golf GTi which I plan to restore to its original glory.

My plan is to get a donor car and swop everything into the shell and therefore take two mk2's that were destined for the scrapyard and create one to be loved and enjoyed for years to come.

My question is: Is there a difference between a Jetta 2.0l 16v CLi and the Golf 2.0l 16v GTi from a mechanical/engine point of view. I ask because finding a Golf 2.0 16v for a donor is proving very difficult - the Cli's are much more common.

Thank you

The mk2 2.0 16V you speak of would be the 9a or AAL (in my case)

I would suggest you rather look for an ABF. It is a revised motor to the 9a and are easily available on Gumtree/Japsport/Mikes Place

Here is some reading material on the two motors

I think he means if the cli and GTI from that era are essentially the same car mechanically.
And yes they are the same.

Hi

Yes I am referring to cars of the same era - trying to keep everything as original as possible.
Thanks for the confirmation that they are the same car mechanically.

Hi

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my post - it is much appreciated.

I am trying to keep the car as original as possible so I do not want to change the type of motor used in the original car.
Thanks also for the link.
