Polo 1.6i 9n3 Gearbox Oil Grade?

Post by Chekando »

Hi All,

This is my first post here, and I have searched high and low to try and find a definitive answer without any luck.

I would like to change the gearbox oil as my car is approacing 150 000km's. I am comfortable with the process of changing it, but I don't know what oil to replace it with.

VW quoted me R450 a litre and I would need 3L's apparently. Is there no cheaper alternative? I don't mind paying up to R200 a litre or so for some premium castrol oil, but R450 seems a little insane to me?

In principle, our manual transaxle boxes use a 75W-90 oil, normally with a GL-4 lubricity rating. You might just want to confirm in your manual, or online, whether that still holds true for your car too. Specifically confirm the GL rating. Using the gearbox code will help during searches.

If 75W-90 / GL-4 still applies to your 'box, then Castrol BOT130M is a good oil to use. I've also used Castrol Syntrans Transaxle before, but I think it's no longer available, at least not in SA.
