Have to replace Polo spark plugs every 5 - 6momths?

Post by MarlonC »

Hi guys,

What could be the reason I have to replace our Polo's spark plugs every 5 - 6 months?

Thank you for any advice.

Have you tried replacing just the number two cylinder spark plug? This would be to isolate the issue to that cylinder, or not.

No problem, the oil is a bit of a concern though and may be fouling up the plug, so you can even look at simply cleaning it up and retrying it. My old Caddy used to foul plugs up from over fueling but cleaning them up sorted any issue out.

May be cylinder 2 rings are on the way out - engine wear.

If it was my car, I would do a compression test first and take it from there.

If one or more cylinders show 10%+ less compression than the others, it is time for an engine rebuild.

Thank you Neuk, after cleaning all the plugs up and the oil it seems that oil is pushing out from the oil cap. Cleaned it all up and replacing the cap. Took her for a spin and everything is okay. Thank you everyone for you input much appreciated.

Pleasure  I am glad that you made some progress but keep an eye out on the oil.

One last thing, that no.2 plug has lots of rust on it, be careful how you wash your engine. Try to avoid spraying anywhere near the coils. Polos like to trap moisture in the spark plug wells, causes misfires and also damages the coils.
