Connecting an oil pressure gauge

Post by Kyle28rsa »

Hi guys. I borrow my buddies oil pressure vdo gauge which i wanted to test my oil pressure out with.

Im not sure how to connect it and not sure if i have the right sensors. I want to hook this up onto my 1.6 carb. I have the 1.8bar switch on the oil filter another switch on the filter but not sure what it is as it just has a connector on top and another on the head (cant remember wat number it was)

Will this switches work as im not sure if its variable switches? If so how would i connect the gauge up? It has 3 pins (+,G and T)

The gauge requires its own sensor. The switches in the car are not sensors, but simply switches that close or break a contact at a specific threshold pressure.

The Mk1 with pressure gauges normally had a cylindrical sensor (almost as large as the gauge) screwed into the side of the cylinder head.

You can't just use any sensor. It has to be the correct spec, otherwise the gauge will indicate wrongly. I haven't seen the VDO sensor on the market for many years.

P.S.: if you just want to test the oil pressure, then the easiest option is to buy a mechanical oil pressure sensor [Edit: I meant to say, gauge, of course] and connect it directly at the engine for testing. I tested my Audi's fuel pressure management with a mechanical oil pressure gauge.

Hi VAG. I see what you mean. Thought as much that it wont just be as easy as connect and go. Will try and have a look at a mechanical version. Any idea where i can get an inexpensive one
