Starter wont turn over

Hi all my driving from work on Wednesday my clutch cable snapped. anyway i tried to drive the car regardless but i ended up being towed home so i replaced the cable yesterday and now the car wont start when i try to start it by the starter itself it just sparks, can anybody pls advise.... mk1 1.8 carb 1993

Are you trying to start it by running power to the starter motor?

If so, why?

Have you checked the charge level of the battery with a multi-meter?
Have you tried to jump start it from another running car?

when i saw that the starter isnt turning over just clicks, i tried to start it by using a spanner on the solenoid terminals to see if it will start i tried to knock on the starter as well but it just not working, i have to kick start now

Have you checked that the alternator is charging the battery?

the alternator and battery seem fine

bought a new starter and life is good again
