Hi All, I have a 1989 Jetta CLX. New clutch, gearbox reconditioned, linkages replaced etc. My problem is that the clutch cable seems to slack or require adjustment every couple of hundred kms - bought new cable from Goldwagen but problem is persisting.
Many thanks for your comment/assistance.

It could be that the grommet at the firewall has not seated properly, and is only doing so now.

Re: Jetta 1989 mk2 clx clutch
I think it is a self adjusting cable- the original cable (auto adjusting cable) was refurbished but it did the same thing, ie every couple of days the car does not want to go into gear and then the cable needs to be adjusted.

Re: Jetta 1989 mk2 clx clutch
there should be a 8mm half nut above of the plastic adjuster "foot" that sits on top of the gearbox, above the clutch arm mech.
get cable at desired length, tighten half nut to the foot.
the foot turns a little bit every time you press the clutch pedal. if nut not tightened.

MK2's dont die, they just get faster!!

Re: Jetta 1989 mk2 clx clutch
Hi All
I am just reporting back on this problem which has been recurring in case anyone may encounter similar clutch cable adjustment issues. I ended up fitting a new clutch and clutch cable in January again, but afterwards the problem persisted again and even the new cable could not be adjusted properly. Long story short, my brother in law had a look at the car, had the gearbox removed and it appeared that the pushrod was either faulty, incorrect or too short and that there was not enough oil in the gearbox. Since replacing the pushrod and topping up the gearbox oil, I have had no further issues.
