Good day all,

I would like some help identifying what engine size and year my Golf 3 is.

The first 3 letters on the engine number are AFV, on the block it reads IHSI03373ABC Gem Tec.

If anyone has any helpful tips they would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

(Not sure how to add photo of engine)

AFV is an 1800 motor.
Should be about 1996 or so.

1996 was also the year they went from Digifant to MP9 so it could either or Carb
Does your airbox have an electronic module on top of it (MAF sensor)

It is fuel injection and has a map sensor on the intake

idle om mp9 is controlled by the management opening the throttle body and playing with the timing. So a throttle body that is failing or incorrect ignition timing affects the idle

Thanks, does the throttle body effect the incorrect ignition timing ?

AFV with GENTECH head should be a 1.8i MP9. IIRC there is a key sequence that you do with ignition to stabilise the revs to do the timing.
