Not going to give you great results for what you going to spend doing it... rather fit 2.0L if you lookingt for best bang for your buck...

Im not looking for a big increase in power. I have another car that is meant for speed. This will just be added extras to give it a little push

GLS should be a 1.5 and should be JB engne code if it is the car's original engine.
I don't know EM engine code at all.

By the time you have spent money doing the usual cam, flowed head, branches + exhaust, dyno tuning to set the jetting in the carb 100% and the timing, etc, it will still be cheaper to drop in a 2.0 8 valve motor.

Yes, there will be a noticable increase in power and torque, but you will spend big money on small gains.

Also destroys the potential value of a car like that... just another boring 2.0l 8v... just gasflow
it and enjoy the car! As you say it's not intended as your performance fix anyway?

Thats correct i jst want a bit extra. Doesn have to be all the bells and whistles. Maybe jst a down pipe and exhaust. Or like u say gasflow and put in a cam. Something small but noticeable

Ok so GLS in south africa was never anything but a 1.5. So if it has a 1.6 that engine was installed later. Because I have never seen and EM motor I can't even comment but you are unlikely to simply get a cam that you can drop in. if you take an picture of the engine I can tell you if the head layout was the same as JB and if you will find a cam easily or not.

"small and noticeable" thats a big ask for that little carb motor. Better off keeping it stock...

leave it alone. It's worth something stock. Engine recon parts for those motors are getting hard to find so if you break it becuase of mods you will be forced to change it for that 2 l you don't want.

My 2c, I know this modding a carb doesn't make sense to some but would like to share my first hand experience of chucking a few thousands, with me doing some labour, into a Mazda carb motor in this day in age,

It was never meant to be fast , It's actually quick to 100 (on par with a std 1.6i Velocity) but after 100, I get gaps for days.

I can plant my foot on the gas pedal , hear epic noises and watch in anticipation as each rev climb all the way to 6500 rpms , its as if I'm driving fast but I'm still in control of the car while still adhering to highway speed limits lol, its not a car where you need to concentrate while flooring it or having to fight with the steering wheel and this is the reason I enjoy the car so much.

Anyway my list of engine mods to date is as follows:
1.3 40 thou Pistons (now just under 1400cc's)
Limited head work - swirled valves and very light port - No cam
branch - 50mm into 57mm exhaust with 2 free flow boxes
Induction with Cone Filter
Carb was tampered to allow 2nd stage to open earlier.
1992 Mazda 323 B3 - Masala Mods
2008 VW POLO GTI - 76mm DP + 63mm exhaust , induction, FMIC, Thanas Tuned
