Polo 1, clucking sound

Post by Jay_K »

Hi Guys,

Last week my 98 Polo 1.8 started making a weird clucking sound.

It only happens when i release the accelerator, the sound is much louder when in gear then when in neutral.

However i dont hear the sound when accelerating or driving at a constant speed.

Noise is coming from the front left of the car.

Ive checked bearings and tie rods but they are still fine.

ANy idea what i can do to troubleshoot the cause?

If the noise is speed dependant then i would look at the box. Specifically the diff.

I only here it when slacking off the power though, there seems to be no sound when accelerating?

Could it be a question of oil?

Get you cv joints looked at. Often an inner will do that. When it' on the lift look at engine mounts, dogbone etc.
