MK2 Jetta CSi engine rebuild

Post by zain_c »

Hi Guys,

I haven't been here in a while, mainly because the mk2 hasn't been giving me headaches. Been pretty well behaved

Anyway, the car is aging (27yrs old) and I think it would be a good idea for a full rebuild/overhaul or whatever you wana call it.

I've done transplants etc in previous cars, but never a rebuild of any sort.

Which parts are all required to do this? what size pistons etc etc. I'm planning to send the head away for work like porting, skimming, big valves etc.
I'm kind of tempted to bore to 1.9 just for that added kick as I do the occasional track day.

I'm happy to say the KJet is still running extemely well too.

One thing i have noticed is, after a session of hard driving and basically nailing it for a period of time, when i get home the engine does sound a bit noisy and like a metal-like sound. Park it for a bit and let it cool down and drive again then it's back to normal...and quiet. No idea what the cause might be.

So if any of the knowledgeable guys on here can be so kind to help me out with parts required for a rebuild and possible pricing it would really be appreciated. also, pros and cons of going 1.9?

Thanks guys :driving:

Are you wanting to rebuild for the extra power or because of oil consumption or just because.
unless there is a real compelling reason then just because it's old is not really a good reason and sounds like an excuse rather than saying I want to fiddle with it.
There is no disadvantage to going 1900.

HAHA... ok yeah, extra power! it's not even using oil...

only thing that is however bothering me is the engine noise after spirited driving session.

Have you measured the oil pressure during and directly after one of those spirited sessions?

Nah I haven't, and don't have the faintest idea on how its done. But definitely something I'd look into.

Thanks

It's lifters. Change them all and it should improve. Also nothing to worry about. It's pretty common.

Yeah, might as well replace while the head is off.

One last q, which brand of piston would you recommend when rebuilding...whether i keep it stock or go 1.9?

also, would any adjustment need to be done on the kjet to accomodate the changes, like after headwork is done etc?

Thanks a mill.

I am rarely a brand slut when it comes to pistons. usually more a case of what you can find. Have never had a piston sommer just fail. whatever you can buy at alert or goldwagen will generally be fine.
