2001 Chico 1.4 Carb Fuel Gauge

Post by RSchoenknecht »

Hi Guys, hoping for some help with my '01 Chico.
Fuel gauge suddenly fell to "off" mark a few days ago and hasn't moved, and I went to a mechanic for his opinion.
He took off the sensor plug on the level under the back seat, bridged out the purple/black wire side to the body and with ignition on, gauge jumped to full. He then said I needed a new float mechanism. I went to my local Goldwagen, only to be told the one they stock can't be sold due to head office flagging it for recall as they've had to many faults on it. So I went to a second hand dealer and got one, R100. Swapped units, and still the same issue. :bang:
Old unit looks good though. I've tried shorting out the two sides of the plug, no change. Only change is when you connect purple/black wire side to body, then gauge shoots up to full.
Is there anything else I can check?

test the unit in the tank and see if the resistance moves / changes when you move the float. IF no change then it's stuffed. if they both work then you have a wire broken on the car side.
