Geloppy gearbox

Post by Sean Trollope »

So after many frustrating hours spent fiddling with the linkages. Replacing bushes. Changing oil. Trying additives. I have come to the realization that there is something wrong inside the gearbox itself. All the gears work normally. But 5th will quite often and annoyingly slip out when cruising along. Making me look like a total cake. It goes into all the gears with no trouble so the synchro is fine. What else. What must I do or try to fix it. I'm incredibly frustrated.

*this is on my 1997 Chico 1.3 with 220000km on the clock. I believe the gearbox is still the original. If I'm correct it is an ffz. I'm no stranger to hard work and am not scared to pull the box out and work on it.

Do you ever have issues going into 5th or is it just slipping out of gear while driving erratically?

5th gear sits in die last piece of gearbox. Can be fix with gearbox in car. Sounds like those dogs or whatever you cal it that flips when you select gear is worn. Should be a easy fix if you google enough

Or it simply needs adjustment. There is an adjustment on the end of the fork on the rod. It's possibly not engaging properly.

Well I took the cover off and the long pin with a spring at the end decided to come with. So yeah. Turns out I need to strip the box to get it back.

So stripped the whole gearbox down. Did all the required adjustments. Also found that the bearing the sits where the selector shaft goes on was non existent. So had a solid one machined out of brass as nobody could supply me with one. Gears all select like a charm.
