Which oil?

Post by ML-MK2 »

Hi

So after some spirited driving saterday,I noticed my tappets is a bit noisey. So this morning on startup it's still the same(been parked since Sat), on my short 3km drive to work there was no change.

With the service around the corner I called a couple of spare shops and got the following advise.

A: I should use Shell helix 25w-60 High milage.
B: I should use Shell helix 10w-40.
C: Recommend Shell helix 20w-50, but not for long as it will/can break the motor.

I was using Engine 20w-50 Multigrade all along, but think it's time for change.
Car in question is mk2 jetta cli 190k on the clock

I know there is a couple of discussions about this, but just need to know what you think about these advise I got and your experiences.

Thanks

Sounds like its time for new lifters. 20w50 is the correct oil for the car

Thanx for the reply Chucker02

You might be right. My thought was it might be the oil that is a bit to thin by now.

So i'd rather want to service the car and see what happens before i start replacing lifters.

Please share the name of this place so that everyone else can avoid it at all costs. They clearly have no clue what they are talking about....

There are 100's of thousands of km's done by those engines on 20w50 without any of them blowing up. I raced a similar motor on regular helix 20w50 for years. No blowing up. change the oil if you have doubts about it to fresh 20w50 but most likely jut lifters that are past their due date.
INA make lifters from goldwagen. Done.

Ordered new oil, filter and plugs, will be changing it later this week and see what's the outcome.

I'd rather not mention the name, coz it's the first time I got such bad advise from said shop. All previous dealings was good.

Thanks Guys

*Side note* Lifters are not that expensive.
Contact Goldwagen and check pricing brand is INA.

I have no idea, only my MkVII Golf gets serviced by a VW dealership due to it's Automotion plan, I use Shell in all my cars including top ups if needed in the MkVII Golf.

I guess its user dependant, opinions will differ from person to person. In the end they all do the same thing

Yep, I have always preferred Shell, so run it in all my cars and I haven't had a days issue in any of them.

Branch dependent , Have a buddy at one of the branches and he said they recently moved over to Engen petronas.

Funny enough hardly any of the VW branches use's Shell , Not sure how the decision is made to decide what oil to use.

It all depends on cost nowadays... Don't know if they are put thrue stringent quality tests or just opt for wich is cheaper so they can profit more or they get better deals by buying it in bulk.
