heavy fuel and exhaust smell when driving

Post by Alexj »

I have a 2006 citi 1.4 carb and could you assist me in finding the fault with my heavy petrol and exhaust fumes smell, it happens mainly when i need to overtake/ pull out quickly for a gap/ around about 3000 rpms.
i don't see and fuel stains or spots where it could be leaking, and i checked my dip stick (another post said that it could be over fueling and might have petrol in my oil) and found that my oil smells alot like petrol.

my fuel consumption is a joke and would really appreciate the help.

More info needed :
1. When last was the car serviced
2. Any work done on the car lately (eg: car or timing)
3. When did it start doing this
4. Does it smell petrol when cold (morning start up) or even during the day.

Car was serviced about 3 months ago when i had the engine overhauled, had some issues with the timing 2 weeks ago and that was sorted out no problem.
It started monday this week, the petrol and exhaust smell is in the morning and the petrol smell is still there during the day but no exhaust fumes>

There shouln't be any play on the base plate as it is a rubber mounting for the carb. They tend to tear from age and cause air leaks. This will make the car run lean unless the fueling was set to accomodate for the extra air.... Check your electronic choke as they also get stuffed, ither in open or close position. You could also check your needle and cede as this could also get stuck and cause overfueling.

Okay, there is nothing wrong with the base plate, i did replace this the beginning of the year.
I did see fuel in the air filter, mainly at the bottom of the air filter casing as well as there is fuel on the pipe leading from the top of the engine into the air filter casing.

the needle and cede? where are these and what do they do for my carb?

Needle and seat. It is a device inside the carb that is attched to a float. It stops fuel from coming into the bowl to stop it from overflowing.
Generally speaking the seat on the VW carb is not replaceable. And secondly it tend not to wear because the needle actually has a rubber tip. So if it does leak then you can change just the needle usually.

I think you are seeing oil on the filter from the breather hose. You could just have a leaking fuel line.

The seat " tipo" ( actually two devices) could get stuck on open position and keep the float down. This normally happens if there is some kind of contaminant in your fuel line like durt or rubber. That being said, could be any number of contaminants. No one said the neadle or seat was worn, just check this if you cannot find any other leaks, as a last resort because you will need to open the carb and could damage the gasket and have some extra expences. :deadhorse:
