Coolant Leak - Polo 9N

Post by KJN »

I have a coolant leak that I am battling to find. Its losing quite a bit of coolant as overnight the level in the expansion bottle drops to just below the minimum level marker on the bottle and needs to be topped up.

Anyone know where the common areas are for leaks in the 1.6 Polo BAH motors?

There arent really any common leak spots..
But u can look around:
1. Radiator tanks
2. Thermostat housing
3. Water pump (timing belt covers need to be removed) this is most likely the issue as most people dont change their waterpumps with the cambelt.

If ur car is using g12 coolant then look for a whitish/pink crusty residue and that's ur leak

When a car tailgates me, i slow down - then floor it and give them a cloud of diesel smoke to choke on :driving:

Thanks.

Waterpump was replaced at 120 000km with cambelt.

WIll look for the white residue as I am using G12 coolant.

Easy to check, a decent Silverton Radiators store will have a pressure tester and it wont be expensive to just do the check.
It is an ingenius solution to a problem that should have never existed in the 1st place...

Thermostat housing and the crack pipe at the rear is the most common leaks on those engines.
Ie all the plastic parts on the left and behind the motor.
