Quality engine parts

Post by kylebassani »

Hi guys.

I am in the process of rebuilding my 1.8 16v kr motor and I am now at the stage of trying to get new parts like bearings and pistons.

So my question is what is a good quality piston and bearing make/manufacturer and where can I find them.

Just a note, I fully agree wossner forged pistons and the like are very good quality but that is a bit out of my price range.

I did see that the KS pistons were good but the quality has greatly depreciated. Mahle it seems is a good brand but I am not to sure and also have no idea where to find.

Everyone's assistance is greatly appreciated.

Mahle or KS pistons.

Bearings look for vandervell or AE or any bearing with LC (lead copper) in them.

Try Alert motorspares ir your local GW.

Goldwagen Primrose is useless. Try Goldwagen Delarey. Yes its a bit of a trip but worth it.

Alert engine spares.

I would most definitely go for a nice bearing on a 16v- something like a set of Kings Black series race bearings. I purchased these from a company called Masterparts here in Durban, it was R1200 if I'm not mistaken. Rings- Hastings all the way, confirmed as a good ring by Panic.
2000 Golf 1 Chico- CRANKCASE [Std 2.0 bottom end, head gas flowed, ported & chopped by Fastcar, 288 Estas Billet, 4-2-1 43mm Brospeed Branch, 50mm-57mm-63mm Exhaust] + THE PART (2B1 speacials) -Final power @ Autotrix 111wkw & 210wnm

2007 Velociti- WHITEWALKER [Std 2.0 bottom end, head gas flowed, ported, valve swirled, 276 Estas, 4-2-1 Branch, 57mm piping from front to back]

I am struggling to get a hold of masterparts.

Also if I look at the catalogue I don't see bearings for the 1.8L 16V only the 2.0L, it would be nice though.

Masterparts have a terrible communication problem, it would be quicker to drive all the way to the store than to hold on the line for a salesman.

Alert also stocks king bearings, i recently asked for king race bearings for a tdi but theres like a 3 month waiting period. Not sure if its only for this specific engine or for all race bearings

So after some up and down conversations and back and forth with requests I got my quotes:

So for the first one, this came from Alert for KS pistons with all AE bearings
Image

Then from GW for Mahle pistons and AE bearings
Image

So then I contacted Alert regarding the King Racing series bearings and got this
Image

Then after some time I asked them to consolidate the final quote and I was told there is no racing series bearing for my motor only normal king bearings and I got this quote from Alert with Mahle pistons, hasting rings, mahle intermediate shaft bearing/Bush, king mains and big ends, and small end is steelback:

I finally had a chance to go buy some engine parts last weekend. The only thing outstanding for now is the main bearings. Hoping they will receive stock soon.Image
