Engine won’t start after conversion

Post by amanita_king »

Hi guys ..i dnt know weather im posting this at the correct place ...but after hours of tryna figure out how utilise this site ... im about to give up! :bang:

First all before everyone gets really annoyed by my post...

Please bare with me i am new to all this plus im not located in South Africa but I genuinely need help...

Anyways ill get to it

So I recently decided to do a convert my citi golf 1.6 from carb to FI
So after finding a polo classic (sedan) 1.4i which had recently had an accident at the rear ...i purchased everything ....i took the engine the gearbox plus the entire loom and ecu and installed in my citi

So every was going smoothly up to the point final point of testing weather all this actually hardwork has actually paid off

Now the issue is the engine just cranks but doesn’t actually start ...

Injectors are pouring fuel
All four plugs are firing

I dd the timing but now im starting to doubt i did it properly but i just did it perfectly the same way i used to on my 1.6 carb

Please assist me any way you can i dnt know much about cars but ive been learning ever since i bought this citi of mine which was literally dead!

Ive tried reading up on “timing for dummies” its not really specific to my AGY engine... so anyone whose done timing on a AGY after an overhaul or something please help... no detail is too small or unnecessary please full details of this procedure and include other documents or images if you have any to aid me.... Im seriously about to throw in the towel.

Thanks all in advance for any help or advice.

What is MUCH easier for everybody is you take some pictures of what you have set with the engine and TDC then we can tell if it is wrong or not. there are many of those type of writeups with pictures here and everywhere on the net. For somebody to now make a whole one again to answer your question is quite a lot of work.

Agree with panic, much easier with pictures.

All VW 8V motors have the same timing marks and are set the same.

Use an image hosting site like postimg.org and create an account there and then copy the hotlink for forums and post that here in the spaces.

Don’t know where you got the blue nark on the cam pulley on the front.

Check this thread for reference to the timing marks.

yup check the inside of the cam pulley. Needs to be lined up with the top of the tappet cover in the front

The blue marks on the pulley im the one who put them so you guys can easily tell .... apprently the issue doesnt seem to be the timing.. noticed my coil got damaged noticed the outlet node is cracked right round and im losting electric current due to this as well so im left to think i have a weak spark thats why theres no ignition

In that case, get another coil and try to start.

Hie guys ...quick update ...managed to get the engine to start and run but unfortunately it just kicks for about 10-15 secs then stops the engine is ceasing or getting tight i dnt really know how to explain it but when i try turn it manual its super tight/stiff i can barely get it to turn even an inch ..but strangely if i wait for about 10 or so mins it starts again normally or to cease again after 10-15secs...

So ive re opened the damn thing and both checked everything and everything checks out...

Any ideas to what am missing?

Sounds like timing is out. Compression bleeds off after a while and then motor turns again. Take spark plugs out and see if motor turns by hand, then re-check timing narks.
