1.6 8v afx motor rattling noise
Hi there guys,
I am in desperate need of any help whatsoever. I have a mk1 citi with a 1.6 8v afx motor. I have the car for 5 years now and it has been well maintained. Last month I noticed the lifters started to get rowdy, and just to be on the safe side I put in a brand new Schadek oil pump and did a service. Even then, the noise persisted so I decided to buy a set of Ina hydraulic lifters and installed them. I replaced the cam belt tensioner as well. I've approached 3 genuine vw mechanics and they said it doesn't sound like a piston flap or a rod knock. They said that it could be the intermediate shaft bearings are worn out resulting in a rattling noise which worsens at high rpm. So just to rule out, it's not the water pump bearing, not the tensioner or lifters, not the alternator bearings, not the camshaft, not the oil pump. What else can it be? Can a worn out intermediate shaft cause this? Any feedback would be much appreciated.

A video of the noise will help big time. The experts on here will know the sound.
\
highly doubt its the inter shaft bearing, barely any lateral torque on the shaft and they are 1 piece bearings

Re: 1.6 8v afx motor rattling noise
Very hard but given the evidence up to this stage I'd say you have run a big end bearing.

Re: 1.6 8v afx motor rattling noise
I had a knock on my 1.8 Polo that i couldnt figure out, turned out to be the Crank Pulley that had broken the Key slot and was running lose, so in easy terms it was ' flapping' which sounded like the crank had run a big end. In other words, make sure the crank pulley is tightened.

Re: 1.6 8v afx motor rattling noise
The noise is not perfectly periodic / regular, but sporadic. I would guess its something external.
