1500 - Sidies Advise

Post by JunaVivo »

So a few months ago I wanted to know if the 1.8 (HV, EV, DX) internals could be used on the old JB block, and PM advised correctly, that it wouldnt work. I understand this, and in my pursuit for a fun NA car whilst keeping the original block, I have opted to rather just do some proper headwork, coupled with a nice cam (268/272), and branch to accomodate the sidies setup.

I must be upfront, I am not chasing power figures and I am building this car for my own enjoyment - keep this in mind.

In terms of the head, I will be using the original head, so im assuming 8v performance is the way to go here? Secondly, im looking for a good set of 38/40 sidies, please advise what I should look out for when purchasing these. Thirdly, I believe the intake can be sourced either from Rowland or Volkspares so I will give them a call.

What else am I missing?

I will need someone knowledgeable to setup the sidies, fueling, timing etc and I will speak to PM at the time to see if he can assist.

Thanks, your input is appreciated.

I can provide zero input other than PM will have a few choice words for you if you ask him to setup any type of carburetor  I am keen to see where you take this though and found these...

I am running sidies on Dean's 8v and also on the 16V...

Jo built his 16v with throttles and I decided to buld the old school Dellorto 16v way.
We will see what the difference is between the 2 in due course .....

Most important on sidies is getting the correct manifold and select the correct carbs.

On the 8v I am running 2 dellorto 40's with 32mm chokes , the 16V is on 2 dellorto's with 34,5mm chokes.

Almost all parts are available from Dellorto.co.uk - and prices are not to bad.

Make sure you start with a decent set and rebuild them.
Jetting and choke sizes can be determined for your motor.

Timing etc is easy , dellorto's have vacuum available for the vacuum advance on your dizzy.

Air cleaners and Ram tubes are available - tight squeeze at the back , but can be done .

Your procurement list:
2 x Dellorto 40's
1 x Rowland manifold
2 x carb kits ( these include all o rings etc ).
1 x linkage set ( available from dellorto.co.uk )
4 x ram tubes
2 x 60 mm air filters or socks.
4 x soft mounts to manifold ( Rowland )
1 x set of jets ( after you check all your sizes )

I would leave the chokes at 32mm to start with - with the jetting I can give you some ideas.

Set the butterflies, adjust float levels , bolt them on , adjust the air mixture screws ..... this will ensure you can start.

Fine tune with manometer ( vacuum gauges ) and you are set !

Shout if you need some help..

@ Nick - Thanks bud, will give those links a read. I really want that old skool setup.

@ Dean - thank you very much for the detailed response, that's exactly the information I was looking for.

I will try to source some of the parts in the interim, presumable will need to order them online.

Also, if you know of somebody selling a good set of carbs please let me know. We can always then get them serviced with the kit and check the jetting etc.

I am really looking forward to this build.

Please PM your details to me.

Thanks

40's are a tad big for a 1500.

Thanks Panic.

And because im learning, please advise what would be the outcome if smaller jets were fitted in the 40's - would that make a difference to compensate for them being abit too big for a 1500?

Or would 38's be a better option here.

Thanks again.

Go on Dellorto.co.uk and buy the ebook - How to build & power tune Weber and Dellorto.

Lot's of info on rebuilding and sizing.

Dellorto's:
40 's - choke sizes 28,30,32 0r 34 mm
45's - 34,36,38 or 40 mm
48's - 36,38,40 or 42 mm

To give you an idea 32 mm chokes on a 40 Dellorto is ideal for 350cc per cylinder - 34 mm chokes = 400 cc per cylinder - 36 mm chokes = 462 cc per cylinder.

There is no magical recipe on what will work - all depends on head work, cams etc.
Trial and error is the best ....

Carbs are old school and the specialists are few and far between.... I found Rowland and Johan Coetzee know what they talk about , and don't mind sharing information.

it's not about jetting. It's about airspeed. But if you are not chasing HP then why complicate it by running side draughts.
Yes smallish chokes will work but it really is a pain to set them up and get it working really well. Very few people left that can or is interested in doing it.

I was startng to read this thread and wanted to suggest that you talk to AC (DeanK), but he was in with a post before I could post.

I ran 40’s on a 1660 GTS motor with 302 duration cam, headwork including larger valves, raised compression to 10,7:1, Wildcat branch and freeflow and it was fun to drive. Used 32 chokes and played around with jets to get the right setup. Motor was not shy to rev.

Since your motor is a smaller capacity and lesser duration cam, I would search for 30 mm chokes for the motor to be a bit more responsive at low rpm.

I can help with 32 and bigger chokes , but smaller you might have to order from Dellorto.co.uk.

I have not seen 30's at either Rowland or JC Racing.

I have a set of throttle bodies - ex bike , that are about 38mm. Complete with all sensors and injectors , just not sure of injector sizes.

@JunaVivo

What did you decide? Yes or No for sidies or still undecided?
