Audi S5 V8

Post by JacquesHuysamen »

Hi everyone, new here so sorry if this is posted in thr wrong place. My parents recently bought a 2013 S5 and I fell in love with it. So i was looking around and wanted to know if anyone has a V8 S5 with high milage. High as in above 150 000 km. Is it safe to buy that high? And then anyone that can comment on how the v8 drives compared to the newer V6. Does the V8 have a nice DSG "fart" like the v6? Thanks everyone :driving:

v8 does not use a dsg box so no farting- thanks goodness. High milage audis can be fine but it truly depends on if the previous woners did the maintenance and had some mechanical sympathy like allowing it to warm up before using full throttle etc etc.
So generally speaking yes if you can get a well looked after car sure you can. They are pretty scarce to find though.
Up at the reef the v6 with charger will outrun the v8. Different story at the coast though

You do get the dsg box on the s5 from 2008 onwards, its the s-tronic dual wet clutch box, I did a rs6 dsg turbo upgrade and also did the dsg sofrware on the box

Also can anyone comment on how the other gearbox is? Not the stronic, the other auto.

Hi, the chain depends on how the car was driven and if the oil used before was fully synthetic. Chain guides seems to be a problem when driving hard on low gears. I have a friend with an A5 3.0tdi. His car is on 260k and it is still driving fine and the chain is still very quite on idle. Hope this helps. Thanks.

You will know what gearbox it uses by looking at the build tag. that is in the boot or in the first page of the maintenance record book.
The 'other' gearbox is a 6 speed ZF auto known as a 6HP26.
I really doubt that the v8 s5 ever had any other box than the ZF auto. (besides manual of course)
It's a very good box and very reliable. If anything goes wrong it is usually just mechatronics valves.
I bring them in from the US.
The boxes does need an oil change despite what audi says. Try to do it around 120-140 k km

http://www.myturbodiesel.com/threads/da ... des.14675/

look at that thread - will explain which is which code.
then stick the code in the net and see what box comes up.

The chain guides in parts are around R15k and depending where you go for the labour anything from around R15k to plenty.
3l tdi simply don't seem to wear the guides or chains.
high revving v8 does and again - depends on the previous owners.
I pulled the v10 in my car which is essentially the same setup at 130k km and there was NO wear. Changed them anyway.

get the correct oil at goldwagen or at ZF directly in edenvale. Take your own container then they will decant for you. Or PM me I also need to do the S6 and I can get a very good deal on 20l then we can share. MUCH cheaper than buying per litre. You will use about 7-8 L

So unfortunately the S5 was not in great condition, lots of chips and small scratches outside, and loads of wear and tear on the inside. Car definitely had a problem on its suspension, made some uncomfortable sounds and the clutch or gearbox seemed to have a problem aswell( when starting to roll forward from a stop it made a horrible noise). So it will unfortunately be a no. Was also very disappointed with the sound of the V8 of the S5, almost no noise in the cockpit. Going to chexk out a 2010 S4 tomorrow, i think the V6 is my personal choice for the S cars

Bad luck, but you will probably be better off with a V6. Just got mine last week and the also not much sound (yet) inside but I am certain there is plenty potential.
