Golf mk1 jerking and dies.

Post by Silver_Surfer »

Hi all, im new to this forum but i truly hope i could get help from someone here.

Im currently driving a 2006 mk1 golf carb. Now I've been having a problem with my car recently, notibly jerking and suddenly the car just vrek  After standing still for a while it'll start but I cant even drive 300m then it vreks again. Also i can feel whenever i throttle beyond 2000rpm i lose power. Recently did a service by replacing whatever needs to be replaced (oil filter, petrol filter, sparkplugs, etc) but still the car jerkz! :bang:

Now im a totally clueless as to what the problem could be. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Have you check that fuel is getting to the carb? And that there is spark at each cylinder?

Remove the spark plug leads from the plugs. Insert a small screwdriver, thick wire or long nail into one connector and rest the lead so that the tip of the nail or wire is about 5-10 mm from a clean metallic surface on the engine, e.g. a part of the cylinder head. Now crank the engine and observe whether a spark jumps from the wire to the engine. (Don't touch the set-up while the engine is being cranked.) Then go to the next lead and repeat.

A good, healthy spark should be audible and should easily jump 5mm through air, preferably 10 mm.

Hi my apologies for my very late reply.

I did as you told me (with wire) and it does exactly what you described, so itz all healthy!

I found out that it was fuel not being transferred to the carb (or at least not enough fuel) and my carb might need to be replaced or just a good ol' clean upon inspection tomorrow. I'll keep you updated as to what's the main problem.

I thank you for your advice

Take note of the AC pump that feeds the fuel to the carb, as well as the base plate on the carb.

As the others have indicated or implied, this sounds like fuel starvation.

If the fuel supply is insufficient, there is no need to replace the carb, at least not yet. Rather, you should check
... the fuel pump (if you remove the inlet line from the carb and place it in a container, then crank the engine, there should be a strong, pulsing flow of fuel),
... fuel filter (but I see you've already replaced that)
... fuel return line
... and possibly also the fuel pick-up line inside the fuel tank. The sieve sometimes gets blocked.
